The Rangers drop to 0-1 as they get a quick lesson in what is so great about the Angels. Bartolo Colon and Vlad Guerrero were awesome last night just carrying the halos to victory. Ryan Drese and Mark Teixeira attempted to match them, and did pretty well in doing so, but in the end, it was too much Bart and Vlad. Good to have baseball back.
Angels 3, Rangers 2 …
While Colon was shaky early, he avoided big-time trouble and stuck around 6 2/3 innings, allowing only a run. Since joining the Angels, he's 7-0 with a 2.03 ERA against the Rangers. He's 12-12 with a 5.75 ERA against everyone else.
Guerrero's been great against everybody else, simply unfathomable against the Rangers. The reigning AL MVP went 2-for-4 with a pair of two-out, run-scoring hits Tuesday: A first inning home run and a sixth-inning double. Since last September, he's 20-for-33 (.606) with eight homers and 14 RBIs in eight games against the Rangers.
The Mavericks hammered the Orlando Magic last night to secure their 5th straight 50-win season, and a few things did jump out at me from the game, despite it being a relatively anonymous night in the context of a full season.
First, Devin Harris had a shining moment versus Jameer Nelson . Nelson saw Harris guarding him, and thought he was going to show Devin a thing or two. He immediately decided to launch into the Tim Hardaway killer cross-over and attempt to make Harris look silly. One problem. Harris picked his pocket easily just as Nelson was trying to go between his legs. Before the play was over, Harris was down court, dunking on Nelson’s head. What a play, what a moment. And Nelson had to be throwing down some serious failed-smile.
Meanwhile, the Marquis Daniels “lack of confidence” world tour continues. He just looks out of rhythm and almost helpless right now. I cannot explain what happened, but it seems directly linked to the coaching change. All I know is that despite his exceptional play over his tenure with the club, he is almost too poor to play right now.
Jason Terry was really good, and Jerry Stackhouse and Erick Dampier appear back and ready to roll. Stackhouse is such a smooth player with the ball. In fact, the Mavericks thoughts on Daniels may be related to Stackhouse the more you think about it. Surely, it will be very difficult to keep Jerry this summer, so the thought process may be this: Use the seasoned Stackhouse now while they can, and then when/if they lose him, expect Daniels to return in his full confident form next fall. Marquis has never been fully healthy or in top form in 2004-05.

Ratings big for NCAA …
CBS' coverage of the Tar Heels' 75-70 win got an overnight rating of 16.0 with a 23 share. That's up 43 percent from last year's 11.2 with a 17 share the network got for Connecticut's win over Georgia Tech. It's the best rating for an NCAA title game since Connecticut's win over Duke in 1999 got a 16.9 with a 25 share.

Mike Vick not enjoying his off-season …
Claiming that Michael Vick gave her herpes, a Georgia woman is suing the star NFL quarterback for negligence and battery. According to the below lawsuit, Sonya Elliot, a 26-year-old health care worker, was infected with the sexually transmitted disease in April 2003 after an unprotected encounter with Vick at the athlete's Duluth, Georgia home. Elliott alleges that after testing positive for Herpes Simplex 2, she confronted the Atlanta Falcons star, 24, about her condition. "I've got something to tell you. I've got it," Vick admitted to her, according to Elliott's State Court complaint, which alleges that Vick then told her that "he had not known how to tell her about his condition, and that it was not something that he liked to talk about."
Every time I watch Pat Garrity play in a game against the Mavs, I think about how much he played a role in the building of this team. Check out his bio …

One last thing. I know I have said this before, but let me say it again. Thousands of people visit this blog on a regular basis according to the statistics, and yet about 0.1% leave comments each day. On the other hand, hundreds email me each day. If you want my preference, I would much rather you leave comments at the bottom of each day’s blog for everyone to see, than the email. But I guess it is ultimately your call.
Welcome to The Ticket team Conrad!!
ReplyDeleteI am leaving a comment because Bob chastized me into doing so. I have nothing else.

ReplyDeleteIs it me, or did Bartolo Colon look like the second coming of Kirstie Alley last night? The guy has gotten HUGE over the past few seasons. I'm starting to think the number 40 on his jersey denotes the number of krispe kremes he eates in one day.
ReplyDeleteThe FC Dallas Insider left out the pure talent that Ruiz has to fall when he loses the ball. Not to mention the yoga moves he uses while laying on the ground begging for a call from the ref.
ReplyDeleteFurthermore, why are we trying to reposition one of our best players?
Shirley - Funny and sad at the same time - brilliant!
The Stackhouse/Daniels theory is the worst theory I've ever heard in the history of the world. I can't believe I just wasted 40 seconds of my life reading that. It makes absolutely no sense. And not just because Stackhouse has 2 more years on his contract after this season. Bob has lost it I think. Time for Conrad to take over the noon - 3 slot.

ReplyDeleteWhy don't you post the World Booking league contestants on the website, so we can keep up.
ReplyDeleteP.S. Please no Baylor Woman's Basketball talk today!
Evidently, I need to start listening earlier. Who the heck is Conrad???

can someone explain to me how they decide the tiebreaker in euro cup?
ReplyDeletelike if juventus wins 1-0 they advance >>>
Yes- the tie-breaker is away goals- So, If Juventus wins 1-0 in the home game, although the total goals is 2-2, they would advance with the goal scored AT Liverpool. If this total is also tied, I think they play an extra period, followed by Penalty Kicks-
On Monday SFC. Paul Ray Smith was posthumously awarded the Medal Of Honor for his actions on April 4, 2003. If you can find time please mention him. People often refer to athletes as hero's. This mans actions were truly heroic. Check out these sites for for info.

Bob, aren't you afraid that not making more of an attempt to rebuild Daniels confidence may come back to haunt the Mavericks if because of injury or poor play from someone else they need him during the platoffs.
ReplyDeleteBob, I highly recommend a trip to Rome. Wife and I went in September and it was a great trip.
ReplyDeleteMaybe the Pope will finally be in the ground when you decide to go.

My comment: Is it true that Man U and Real Mad might be playing at the new complex in Frisco sometime next year??? And you've made no mention of it?!?! (or at least none that I've noticed)
ReplyDeleteHey, I was commenting back when commenting wasn't cool (even on weekends). Keep up the good work, Bob!
ReplyDeleteBob,
ReplyDeleteThe great thing about Jim Nantz announcing the Championship game on Monday is that we get to rip him on Tuesday. Even the latest Golf Magazine knows what a beating ole Jim is when it comes to delivering a pun at the climactic moment. Everyone remembers such greats as Vijay means victory, Rich...and famous & Yes you may! GM suggests some of these groan-worthy, life force sucking gems you might hear late afternoon on Sunday. Shameless.
"Howell do you do!"
"Choi - to the world!"
"DiMarco of a champion!"
"Justin Rose blooms among the azaleas!"
"Chad Campbell....mmm-mmm good!"
"Tim Herron: absolutely flab-ulous."
"Westwood Ho. everyone. Westwood Ho!"

Bob, Nance-isms are no match for some guy named Tommy Tide on CBS Radio Sports. He does scores, updates, radio replays, etc during the NFL season that are riddled with bad puns.
ReplyDeleteRadio replays - a beating.
Bad puns?

3 Jack-
ReplyDeleteSend me a link of that Nantz article- I need it!

Bob,
ReplyDeleteSorry. No link exists on the Nantzisms in GM as it was only a blurb on pg. 59. My previous post was a pretty accurate summary.

I am noticing that ESPN is showing 3 of the 4 quarterfinal games for the Champions' League. Last year there was only one all the way to the final. Has ESPN gathered that there is more interest in "futbol" and thus started showing more games?!?! All I know is, I went to the Dallas Cup, and the stands were pretty full. Plus, America is about winners, when you see the Men's National Team starting to do well in World Cup play, interest is going to rise in soccer. My suggestions for the MLS: raise the salary cap to 3 million, so that the average salary is at least 100-120K (who wouldn't want to play a professional sport where they could make that kind of money?), get sponsors on the kits like in Europe, develop youth ranks for corresponding cities, and develop a relegation system like in Europe where the worst team moves down, and the top team in the A-League or whatever it's called moves up. Make it more interesting.
