The Strike Team and the Mailbag

Tonight, 9 p.m. I am sure of what I will be doing. The kids will be asleep, the beverage in hand, and FX will be on the television, as the Shield returns for its triumphant 5th season of stressful tv viewing.

Today, if you goes to BobandDan.net you can hear yesterday’s interview with Kenny “Lemonhead” Johnson, and past interviews on our show with Michael Chiklas, and Walt “Shane” Goggins.

Also, if you haven’t been searching around our new-look website, check out the Sound Page and see many cool sound elements, that I didn’t even know were there until last night. I guess they never told us what they were doing on the website, but it is cool.

Anyway, The Shield tonight. Party.

Don’t look now, but Mavericks games have been awesome lately. It looks like those boys are ready to take center-stage on the Dallas Sports Scene. The last 3 games in particular have been absolutely riveting viewing, with the Mavs showing how clutch they can be in the game’s final moments. Monday, Stackhouse drops a bomb with :00.1 left, to finish the Celtics

The Mavericks' last three wins have been by a combined eight points. Five of their last seven wins have been by five points or fewer.

"These games are giving us a comfort zone in late-game situations," said Stackhouse (20 points). "It was my night to knock it down. There's not a better feeling than to see that ball go in with zero-point-one showing on the clock."

Stackhouse follows Devin Harris (at Denver) and Jason Terry (at Seattle) in the Mavericks' game-winning shot parade.

This one came after Nowitzki's jumper with 16.1 seconds left put the Mavericks up three, 102-99.

Meanwhile, but the Stars have not been to shabby, either. Road wins at Detroit on Sunday, and at Minnesota on Monday …ties the Stars with most wins in the National Hockey League with 28…Hedberg has been solid all weekend, despite allowing a goofy goal last night…

After winning twice in relief of Turco, Hedberg earned the start against the Wild and appeared in three consecutive games for the first time as a member of the Stars. He improved his record to 8-1 in 10 games this season, including seven starts, and has surrendered only two goals in his last 223 minutes of play.

"The team's been playing phenomenal in front of me," said Hedberg, who made 25 saves Monday. "I have all the respect in the world for the way they're playing for me."
Hedberg played in only five of the Stars' first 31 games, but has played in five of 11 games since. This has been the first taste of everyday competition since his days as the starter in Pittsburgh three years ago.

Very funny bit Dude crashes Montreal Canadians practice

Not sure why I feel compelled to blog this, but I do. Some watchdog website is listening to Stern’s new show and counting his naughty words

Shock jock Howard Stern's first 5 1/2 hour broadcast on Sirius Satellite Radio Monday contained an estimated 129 expletives, a watchdog group said.

FamilyMediaGuide.com auditors counted 68 uses of the f-bomb as well as many other instances that would have drawn the attention of the Federal Communications Commission had Stern been broadcasting over public airwaves.

MAILBAG

My guess is that Parcells' motive for the retirement talk was 1/3 for the money, and 2/3 to extract a promise from Jerry for a big free-agency this off-season. And I hope that's what he was doing,
because I think the Cowboys are just 2 solid offensive linemen away.

Serenity now Bob,
Mike

---
I'm glad someone thinks it's a good idea to keep Parcells. If it were for the Hardline ( I'm a big fan of there's ) we would have Spurrier or Coach Fran in here. How do you think that would look? The complaints are baffling to say the least. Parcells yells the f-word at a kicker and he's a bully, but Jimmy cuts a guy from his livelihood for missing a voluntary workout and he's a hero? I know it's all about results but years of poor drafts cannot be turned around in a season. Remember Bellicheck (sp) never won a Super Bowl without Charlie Weiss! If you aren't going to make a real run at the Super Bowl then I would personally rather miss the whole production and get a better draft position. Especially when I think the guy drafting knows what he's doing.
Michael Brown
---
How much do you think Marty Turco likes living in Dallas?
Signs new contract and is subsequently pulled in his next two starts! If he were in Montreal or Toronto, he'd be getting grilled like you've never seen. Hell, given he made the Canadian Olympic team, they probably are grilling him.

Why do people keep saying that Vince Young has never taken a snap under center and that should be a concern?
Tony Romo can take a snap under center every play. Jason Garrett can take a snap under center every play. But Vince Young, the most incredible athlete to ever emerge at the QB position...apparently he can't make the transition to take a snap under center. THIS IS LUNACY! If you think that Vince Young can't take the snap under center and drop back 5-7 steps, then you are an absolute minutia-driven idiot. Is he more comfortable from the shotgun? Sure. But saying he hasn't taken a snap from under center all year and that might be a problem in the pros...that's ridiculous. If he couldn't throw the ball 20 yards, that would be a problem. The most amazing athlete Texas has ever produced will be able to do what Drew Bledsoe does every week. It's all a matter of what he does once he drops back.
Done venting,
Brad Wofford

Bob,

Just because Vince is in the top five on mock draft boards that automatically means he will be an NFL success? It sounds like you are taking shots at people saying Vince wont make it as a starting QB in the NFL. What does being drafted highly mean? Ryan Leaf was drafted highly. Could he play in the NFL? Yes I agree that the NFL wants him and is ready for him to come out, but that doesnt mean that his "NFL doubters" are incorrect. We will have to wait and see how he plays in the NFL as a QB before that is decided. I would include myself in the Vince-NFL doubters crowd. I just dont think he can play QB at a high level in the NFL, thats all. I dont see how you can say I am wrong just because NFL mock draft boards have him in the top five.
Only time will tell if I am wrong.

Bob,

You seem so sold on Vince Young right now and I just dont understand why. I mean using the only comparison there is (Michael Vick)....the year Vick took the Hookies to the Championship he was every bit as dynamic as Young, but I think you'll agree he was a more polished passer. Vick lit up a solid FSU defense (as Young did to Ohio State).

I dont know where you stand on Vick, but I think he's on the way down. I mean he gets hurt more often and his passing just gets worse. The NFL is a whole different ball game and to take Young over Bush or Leinert...I think you are taking a huge gamble.

Point here...if Atlanta had a do-over, would they rather have Vick or Tomlinson and Drew. I mean Leinert compares favorably to Breese coming out of Purdue...maybe better, and I think a Tomlinson-Bush comparison (coming out of college is a fair one). All I can say is the NFL game is just way to different. Great college athletes (Ware, Akili Smith, Vick, Kordell) dont make great QB's, just as great "smart" college QB's (Weinke, Ken Dorsey, Heath Shuler) dont often work out either.

Tap on the breaks my friend!!!

Vince is the first QB in College Football history to throw for 3000 yards (actually threw for 3036) and rush for a 1000 yards in the same season. In fact no other QB has even passed for as much as 2500 while also rushing for a 1000. To top this off, he passed for 64%. Vick didn't crack 58% nor did he pass as much as Vince. Any comparison to Mike Vick should be done with. One thing about accurate QBs is that if they are accurate in college they will be accurate in the NFL. If they are inaccurate in college they will be inaccurate in the NFL. Vick didnt even throw for 2000 yards in any one season in college. That would be Vince's worst season. Shoot Mike Vick didn't even run for 600 yards in one season.

And another thing Vince didn't even run that much. All Longhorn fans who watched every game know this so the labelling of Vince as a running QB is stupid. He only really ran when he had to, mostly in the BIG games. He gained nearly 500 of his rushing yards in 2 games (USC and Oklahoma St) In fact towards the end of the season (check the stats) most Longhorn fans were complaining that he wasnt running to save himself from getting hurt (due to eyeing the NFL)

Vince was also the NCAA passing efficiency leader largely because of the fact that his passing yards/attempt (9.9) were the highest in college. So one can't say that his percentage is only high because he was dinking and dunking to RBs and his TE. That would be totally false. This guy will be a revolutionary player in the NFL. Even I didnt believe at first but this guy has proved me wrong too many times times for me to doubt him now. The fact that he was blown out in heisman voting is a travesty. Although I think he should've won, the margin of his loss is the most ridiculous aspect of him not winning the Heisman. Even Mike Martz was marveling at his ability. When asked about his throwing motion Martz said the talk about it was overstated. All you look at is his abilit

How can a QB who accomplishes something that has never been accomplished in a 100+ years of football not only not win the Heisman, but lose by the RECORD margin that Vince did? That is an out and out travesty.

Bob,

Okay. I am absolutely positive that this is totally homo-esk, but I want to make sure that its not just me. What do you think about the group of guys that stand up at stars games to ask "Hey bill, how much time is left?" to get the auditory response of "one minute, one minute left in the first period" at this point the group of guys stand back up to say "thank you". This bit destroys my life force, but I want to get your HSO.

Sturm,

I am listening to you as I type this email and beg you to please pump your breaks on Vince Young NFL Pro, Number 1 pick and all that nonsense. If best if he wanted to play quarterback he may want to look at the CFL. I look to you as a sports connoisseur so please do not cloud my thoughts of you. Have you heard of the names of Tommy Frazier, Major Harris, Cordell Stewart and Mike Bishop? These quarterbacks were of the same caliber if not better at that position. He (Vince Young) should look to maybe playing wide out or running back. Continue to do your homework and stay the sports no it all.

Duane Johnson

There you have it. Emails and more emails. Happy Shield Day….

I HATE the "hey Bill, how much time is left guys"

The BIT is VERY OLD, I would rather keep the hey song and get rid of these guys.

There has to be some way to get them to shut up.

    Duane Johnson = MORON

Tommy Frazier, Major Harris, Cordell Stewart and Mike Bishop were of the same caliber if not better at that position? Are you kidding me? Have you seen VY play?

And the CFL comment is just stupid.

All of these VY haters are either bitter because thier team got beat by VY or they NEVER watched a Texas game with him at QB this year. He may not be an NFL QB, but to compare him to Mike Bishop or Tommy Frazier is f-ing stupid. Everybody was saying he couldn't play QB in college a couple of years ago. Now everyone has changed their tune. You should have learned from that mistake and keep your VY hating quiet until he proves he can't play in the NFL.

I really think people who say young can't be successfull in the nfl are just fooling themselves. While I am not here to say he is the savior, I think he can be a solid NFL qb with the right grooming. He needs a situation where he can sit and learn, work on some mechanics, etc. He has the ability to sit in the pocket and pass, all season long the guy was pass first, run second (unless it was a designed run play)
Simply put you simply can't deny his numbers.
And those that say he only threw to te's and rb's, maybe thats because they were his best targets. UT hasnt had a standout wr since williams left. 9.9yrds per attempt doesnt sound like dink and dunk to me.

  4. Granted, I am a UT homer...But most of the people who think that Vince Young will not make it in the NFL have only seen a handful of his games. If you only watched each of the Rose Bowl games, he comes off as a running QB, but watch all of the games and you will see everything that an NFL team would love to have. A tremendous leader who takes what the defense gives him. If he were strictly a running QB, he could have led the nation in rushing. VY will be a top 5 pick - Where was Bishop picked? The 6th or 7th round? He has an equal chance of success as Lienart - don't be surprised if Vince goes before him. Cody Hodges from Tech will be lucky to be drafted in the 5th round. Is Hodges a running QB? He ran 12 times against UT - Vince ran 7 times. Even Lienart ran 6 times in the National Championship game.

McNabb doesn't run like he used to, but he can move around in the pocket and avoid a sack. The Cowboys would be in the playoffs if Bledsoe could buy a little time. I like him as a QB, but he is a statue back there. There is nothing wrong with having an atheletic QB.

For all of you Mel Kiper starter kits, just wait and see. Nobody is a sure thing.

Draft talk is such a beating, but someone needs to do a 5 year trend analysis on draft position vs production. "Sports Geek, HELP, we need you!!!"

Marcus Vick "Little Mexico"? Uh, what would he be called if he was actually mexican...."Little Nigeria"? Or even better, I can't wait for the white athelete who's nicknamed, Uncle Tom!!! Oh well, I guess his nickname in jail will be "My Bi$%#". Enjoy Marcus, enjoy.

You need to drop West Wing and get back to BSG. It really is the best drama on tv right now.

Vince Young is the best athlete in college football and arguably should have the Heisman trophy winner. No doubt the guy is of NFL caliber. He is better than some of the guys starting in the league today. The question and fear for the top 3 to 5 picking teams is whether he needs to go this early. Is he worthy of the guaranteed money and the opportunity to pick a more defined talent such as the Leinart's and Bush's. I love the him and Texas but he is a late first rounder at best in reality.

This just in...college football still sucks.

Anyway, the Stars just traded John Erskine to the Islanders. The good news is, he'll have plenty of room to pack his stuff for the trip. That gigantic bag of nothing he's been carrying around will finally be useful.

Can't wait to hear what BaD Radio has to say about it tomorrow.

When will people learn? Please stop underestimating Vince Young.
I admit I have misgivings about his delivery, but that's outweighed by the certainty that he'll find a way to make it work. All he's ever done is succeed.
