NFC South Draft Notes
Part six of an eight-part series as I prepare for the draft by jotting notes of each team's current situation. Today, the NFC South continues our trek through the NFC.

NFC SOUTH
Carolina Panthers 7-9
Offense 11th/ Defense 20th
Finished the season 6-2 after 1-7 start.
Steve Smith, Kris Jenkins, Stephen Davis all injured plenty in 04
Lost: Mus Muhammad WR (16 TD’s), D Brezezinski, A Hawkins WR
Added: Ken Lucas (Seattle), Mike Wahle (GB),
Rookie Keary Colbert (47 catches) will try to replace Muhammad- Steve Smith back and Ricky Proehl are the WR’s-
26 INT’s led the NFL
Lucas signing means Ricky Manning is now a nickel back (Chris Gamble other starter)
Carolina turned the ball over plenty-
Needs: Offensive Line, WR help, LB
Pick #14th – Derrick Johnson? LB or OT?
New Orleans Saints 8-8
Offense 15th/ Defense 32nd
DEFENSE AWFUL! More total yards against than anyone in football
30th against the run only SF gave up more points
Offense is inconsistent: Aaron Brooks is not progressing
WR – Horn, Stallworth – RB, McCallister – skill positions solid

Dunn, Duckett, Vick combined for 2500 yards rushing. #1 rush offense in NFL

Defense Led NFL 48 sacks/ 19 INT’s. Lots of pressure defense; switched to 4-3 in ‘04

Despite losing Sapp and Lynch still ranked 5th defense

Lost 8 games by 7 points or less – FG kicking horrendous in 04
Mark Clayton last year really helped at WR 80 catches 1200 yards (only 1 of 7 1st round WR’s to break 1000 yards last year)-
Brooks, Barber, and Rice all over 30 years old.
NEEDS: Offensive Playmakers (RB), Offensive Line help, Youth on Defense
5th pick in 1st round: Braylon Edwards? Cadillac Williams
