Julius in a Boot

Sturm and Jones discuss life in the NFL, above.

Julius Jones is injured

Running back Julius Jones was wearing a walking boot on his left leg Tuesday and the Cowboys are preparing as if he will not play Sunday, a source said.

Jones missed the second half of the Cowboys' 33-10 win over Philadelphia because of a high ankle sprain.

Durability is this guy’s biggest issue. I know I have said this a lot, but I cannot get passed the fact that I think he is not the type of RB to stay healthy through 300 carries. He is not alone. There are plenty of players like him that you can only expect for 13-14 games a year (Fred Taylor, Ahman Green, Priest Holmes), but let’s not assume he is Emmitt Jr.

New Hockeybuzz.com post here: Stars 3, Coyotes 2 …Mike Modano played his best game of the year and got rewarded for it with a pretty assist and a huge shorthanded goal.

Dish Network screws up a sporting event? …Wow. Breaking news there.

The Stars said they were told that several Dish Network subscribers did not get the game on OLN. "We have talked to OLN, the league and Dish Network, and they assure us they are aware of the problem and are doing everything they can to make sure 100 percent of the homes receive OLN," Stars director of communications Rob Scichili said.

I am a Directv guy. The reason I would never consider Dish Network (despite the fact that I may read a commercial once in a while) is that they screw up so many sporting events a year that I would go crazy. I have received 20 emails from people who missed last night’s game because Dish Network doesn’t have their act together. Over the years, this has happened with Stars games and Mavericks games more times than I can count. They obviously are not serious about fixing their problem.

Amare out 4 months! …The Suns are a bit more equipped for injuries this year, but there is no replacing that dude…

Redskins ready to get a divorce with Arrington

The steady decline of linebacker LaVar Arrington's playing time -- and perhaps his career in Washington -- continued Sunday as the three-time Pro Bowl pick failed to get on the field for the Redskins' 21-19 loss at Invesco Field at Mile High.

Arrington played fairly regularly in Week 1, then got five plays against Dallas, two plays against Seattle and none against the Denver Broncos.

Even with Washington trailing by 11 points late and coaches funneling in depth players such as defensive lineman Ryan Boschetti, Arrington was an afterthought. Most of the game he stood alone at one end or the other of the sideline and was quick to congratulate teammates as they came off the field. He sat draped in a coat on the bench for much of the second half, benched entirely for the first time.
"I didn't play," Arrington said. "There ain't nothing to talk about."

I am sure this has nothing to do with his contract lawsuit…

Tony Kornheiser gives his take on Lavar

Last time I looked, LaVar had played good enough defense on some darned good defensive teams here to be elected to the Pro Bowl three times -- which is two more times than anybody else on that defense. And just a few months ago, in June, this same Gregg Williams was quoted saying, "It's no secret that I'm a better coach when LaVar is on the field." So, wha' happened?

It's hard to believe a healthy LaVar Arrington isn't good enough to get into the game. (If I owned the Redskins, I'd want to see that with my own eyes.) But if the Redskins don't want LaVar, they should deactivate him, and not strand him out there in his clean jersey so it looks like they're deliberately trying to embarrass and punish him.

Another day, Another Vikings scandal ….

Mark Tauscher, Green Bay’s Right Tackle suffers first holding penalty of his life

During Tauscher’s six-year NFL career, he never had been called for a holding penalty.

Tauscher’s streak ended in the third quarter when he cut-blocked Saints defensive tackle Brian Young but never appeared to put his hands on Young.

“I didn’t see a penalty,” Packers coach Mike Sherman said. “I was confused myself on who they penalized there.”

Tauscher said he also never had been called for a holding penalty while at the University of Wisconsin and was unsure if he was called for one while in high school.

“It’s been a long time,” Tauscher said. “In fact, that may be the first one I’ve ever had.”

Tauscher said he would live with the ruling, even on a questionable call.

First Stars game I have ever been to last night. And I have to say I had a great time, but where was all the fights. A couple of minor scrums but that is not satisfactory for me.
Then tried to go by the Jack Daniels Bar to hollar at Sturm and Dan only to realize that there were about 400 people in there. How do you ever do a show from that place.

Even though the Suns added a bit more depth, don't forget they lost Johnson and Hunter, and replaced them with Raja Bell, Brian Grant, and Kurt Thomas. In light of the absolute S-P-A-R-E-N-E-S-S they have added to the roster, I'm not sure they are more equpped this year to handle Amare's injury.

But nonetheless, I hope they are able to at least make the playoffs this year. As a Mavs fan, the last thing I want is to see the Suns get a lotto pick.

As for Amare himself, its difficult to feel bad for him. He signs a huge extension and THEN lets everyone he needs surgery?

    Very Nice.

Plus, how can you feel bad for a guy that has the words "Black Jesus" tatooed on his person?

    Its impossible.

This will be interesting. Lets see how far the "League MVP" can carry his team, heh?

On another note, Jim Rome is neither funny nor witty - and neither is that bitter Yankee fan that wrote that stupid blog.

  3. Take it easy on Romey..

He just has a little bit of Oprah in him (saying things that you think are earth shattering and patting yourself on the back way to much)... what's wrong with that?

    yea..it's annoying as hell.

Send LaVar our way. I'd take that dude any day. He's a complete badass!!

I don't think this one can be blamed on Dish Network. Sounds more like an OLN problem to me.

Here is the email I got from the Stars.

Thanks for your e-mail. The VP of Broadcasting from the NHL was here in Dallas
tonight at the game and we asked him why certain areas of Dish Network coverage were
not getting the Stars game vs. Phoenix on OLN. He informed us that several pockets
of Dish Network around the country require that 40% or more of their subscribers
sign up for OLN on a tiered format (a premium customers pay to get certain channels)
to air their primary content (in this case - the NHL). If the subscriber base is
less than 40% do not have OLN, they get "alternate programming." He told us that
"OLN is well aware of the problem and they are in negotiations with Dish Network to
clear this up so that 100% of their subscribers will get hockey every time it is on
OLN." The league is also trying to help push this through so that all households can
    get OLN without a problem.

The league faced a similar problem in 1993 when ESPN2 was launched. It took a couple
of weeks to sort things out then and get ESPN2 in more and more homes, and the
league tells us that OLN will grow very fast and get in many new households at a
    rapid pace.

The Dallas Stars have expressed our high concern on this matter to the league, OLN
and Dish Network. Both OLN and the league have promised us that they will stay on
the issue and get it solved ASAP. We will stay on the matter to try and get it
    solved sooner than later.

    Thanks again for your e-mail.

After living in Houston for a year, Rome seems mildly entertaining...at least compared to the local 610 AM guys.
I swear, the local HSO makers down here predicted the Texans would go 8-8 or better this year. There's got to be a homer-call-diamond to be found on 610. But I guess Houston would have to win to give them a chance to homer-out.

I've lived in Houston for years now. Grew up in the Metroplex & really miss the Ticket. Can't listen at work due to a firewall but listen every chance I get at home. 610 am bites, I'd rather slash my wrists then listen to them. The station is the Texans flagship station. They are a joke, I actually heard a prediction of 10-6 this year for the Texans. The entire station is full of Houstonian Homer Cowboy Envy hosts. Hoping for a Ticket flagship station in Houston.

Rome is the generic putz that every aspect of media has to have. He bumps around the profession until his enduring suckage finally lands him in Topeka doing high school Gymnastics coverage.

    Bah Stars. Go Bruins.

You know Bob, I think--maybe---Dallas Cowboy fans are finally realizing how freaking lucky they were in the 90's. After thinking that Quincy, Chutch, Henson, Leaf...whoever is going to step in and fill Troy's shoes (shoes that fans were calling to be filled by Bureline btw) we finally found a real live QB who plays like (an old) Troy did...and it's GREAT!! How fun is it to see Drew take a 5 step drop and launch a SPIRAL (a spiral!!!) into the waiting hands of his WR 30 yards down field!

Now, after suffering through the Spare-fest that was Troy Hambrick we found the Next Emmitt Smith in Julius. Except one thing...Emmitt was in-freakin-credibly lucky to make it so long without a significant injury. By extension...us fans never had to suffer through what 90% of the other fans put up with. Until now.

  10. Clendenin and Anonymous are right: good Lord the sports radio in Houston sucks. You know it's bad when the syndicated guys on ESPN radio and Sporting News radio blow away the local guys. I have been praying for the Little Ticket to go satellite so we can be spared from the spare Granato, Zurlein, et al. I actually think Granato is technically retarded. And the Dallas/Cowboys bashing gets really, really old. Jealousy is such an ugly thing.

I count myself as singularly blessed. I never payed attention to Spppooorts until a couple years ago when I found Norm on KLIF. Then he jumped to the little ticket and I came (uh..moved?) with him. Since then I've never needed another spppoorts station. The few times I've grazed over at ESPN or that Beatles station I wanted to gnaw through my own wrists. Long live the Ticket...viva la Ticket!!
