Worst Cheap Shot Ever

Watch this

Bulter given a 1 game suspension ...

''First and most importantly, I am focused on the safety of all college players -- our own and those of our opponents," said Virginia athletic director Craig Littlepage in a statement. ''I am thankful no one was hurt as a result of this play and am sorry it occurred. I am also focused on how the University and Brad Butler, as well as all college football, will be viewed in the aftermath of the Boston College game."

Though Butler was not penalized on the play, the incident resulted in the ejection of BC defensive tackle Al Washington for a retaliatory spear on Butler. Kiwanuka, too, was ejected with 5:38 left in the game when he caught Butler with a right cross to the chin as they tangled on a pass play.

''Football is the most intense and physical of all games," said Virginia coach Al Groh. ''Because it is so, all of us who have the privilege to participate should have the utmost respect for the game itself and for fellow players and coaches. On Saturday, Brad crossed the line in adhering to that standard, and for that he must take accountability. We have talked in detail and he has assured me that his actions on the play at issue were a result of over-aggressiveness and over-exuberance to block a challenging opponent and without malice."

Kiwanuka had sprained his right ankle in the second quarter but returned in the third, only to get blindsided by Butler. When Kiwanuka was ejected later in the game, Butler was spotted celebrating.

''We regret that the incident occurred and apologize to Mathias," Groh said. ''We prize and promote sportsmanship, discipline and accountability and are all concerned that Brad did not handle himself in line with what we expect of a Virginia football player."

Butler also released a statement, saying, ''I've never been one to play outside of the rules. I was not trying to hurt Mathias Kiwanuka. I was engaged in blocking him because he is the type of player who makes plays all over the field. I regret this event occurred and have put the incident behind me."

Nice apology, Jerk. A one game suspension is the most embarassing penalty ever given. In case you aren't aware, Kiwanuka is a projected 1st round pick. That cheap shot could have cost him $20 million.

Worst ever? How about when Charles Martin picked up Jim McMahon and body slammed him after the play was over? I believe that put McMahon out for at least a couple of games...

I think Mr. Butler's right leg should be amputated. That's about the only punishment warranted for such a classless cheap shot like that.

I'd withhold the sedatives and the anesthetic too.

And let's fire the zebras while I'm dictator of the universe too...

So the ref is looking right at it, and not only is Butler not thrown out of the game, he doesn't even get a f***ing penalty?!!!

Whatever chickens**t ref that was who looked at the play and decided no penalty should be called should also be suspended.

And that one week suspension is a joke.

isn't an ejection an automatic 1 game suspension? that would mean that the bc players are penalized just as bad as that jackass

Regarding the Real Sports story on racism in Europe, especially in Spain. Just to clear up a few things about Spain. Those people are not necessarily "minorities." Many are blonde-haired with blue eyes, your classic Anglo look. (This is from visiting the country.)Bob, I'm sure you know who Iker Casillas and Fernando Torres are. The first word that pops in my mind when picturing those two surely would not be "minority." I have a friend who did live in Southern Spain and related to me that part of the racism stems from the Dictator Norm references so much, the dictator Franco. His EXTREME right-wing leanings are only one generation removed from the current one. (He died in 1975.) And there is a theory that it will take at least one more generation to weed out the xenophobic attitude that is generally displayed in the country.

  10. Does anyone know if the NCAA hasn't any authority to suspend Butler, or is it solely up to the school?

    That really pissed me off.
