We Lose the Bluths

Well, its not like we didn't see this coming, but, it finally happened. The genius television production that proved too smart for America has died. R.I.P. Arrested Development

The Bluth clan of Fox's ratings-challenged "Arrested Development" is also headed for the exit after Fox cut the third-season order on the Emmy-winning comedy to 13 episodes.

As for the demise of "Arrested," it comes just as the acclaimed comedy came back this week after a hiatus to make room for Fox's baseball coverage. The two back-to-back episodes averaged a paltry 4 million viewers Monday, sending Fox to fifth place in the 8 p.m. hour and putting a dent on the ratings of its lead-out, the rookie drama "Prison Break."

There is a possibility that the show will be shopped around, but its high cost is expected to be prohibitive for a cable network.

Jan Hubbard looks at Quincy on the Hardline

There were many amusing highlights, but my favorite occurred when the interviewers tried to get Carter to answer whether or not he is in the NFL program for drug violators.

At first, Carter said, "I'm smart enough not to even get involved in those issues."
When pressed further, Carter said: "Let me give you an answer so we can go to the next question because we're stuck right now. I don't know."

Priceless.

There were other moments.

During another exchange, Carter was being grilled and said: "I'm not running for president so I can't technically say what I've done in the past."

Actually, in the industry, that is known as the Mark McGwire response.

Phil Sheridan points out that McNabb has now handled everything from Limbaugh to Owens

I wanted to do something that is rare here. I wanted to wish Baylor a level of good luck tomorrow. They play Missouri on Saturday. They must win if they dream of a bowl. win or else in Waco ...

In coach Guy Morriss' estimation, his crew lacks nothing in terms of talent or momentum heading into either matchup. On that point, he's exactly right. Baylor has a better defense than either Missouri or OSU, an asset Morriss hopes to use as his trump card in lifting the Bears out of the South Division basement and into the postseason for the first time since 1994.

The challenge will be propping up players' psyches as they head to Columbia, Mo., mired in a quarterback controversy and shaking off the residue of consecutive shutout losses to Texas Tech (28-0) and Texas (62-0). Morriss said he's encouraged by the way players have dismissed recent struggles and embraced the concept of playing a "one-game season" against Missouri.

"We either win this one, or we're home for Christmas," Morriss said. "The carrot is still dangling out in front of us. We've just got to grab it."

C'mon. No matter who you like, shouldn't Baylor be in a Bowl? I might actually care about the Fort Worth Bowl then. It is like a college football "make a wish". Sic em.

Dirk’s back “scary”

"That's as scary as it gets," Johnson said of seeing Nowitzki hobble to the locker room during a game. "Not saying one player means more to us than another. But especially when you're dealing with a back. You see backs and knees, you get concerned."

Particularly when one of Johnson's best friends, David Robinson, fought back trouble through a large portion of his career.

"That's the first thing I thought about," he said. "Whenever somebody has a back injury, I think about David."

Fortunately for the Mavericks, the news is optimistic for Nowitzki. He had an X-ray, which showed no problem with the spine. He took a muscle relaxer and got a good night's sleep.

And at an afternoon practice at Charlotte Bobcats Arena, he was able to do enough to give him hope of playing tonight. He is officially a game-time decision. If he can't start, Keith Van Horn would.

Specialty teams rule the day, Nashville beats the Stars

Thursday's game was not for the hockey purist.

Nor was it the end-to-end action of the Stars' win over Colorado on Saturday, which the new rules are designed to encourage. No, this was start-and-stop hockey. Sure, scoring chances were up. But what do you expect when the clubs combine for 19 power plays?

"It was a very frustrating game," Stars coach Dave Tippett said. "I don't want to comment on the officials. I'll get fined."

The Stars' penalty-kill unit, which had to kill off more than 16 minutes of power-play time, didn't get the job done. And it failed to so against a team struggling to score on the power play the past few games. Nashville's first-period goal on Thursday snapped an 0-for-26 drought on the power play.

DALLAS RADIO DUO GETS DANNED: "Dan Patrick's show is so bad, not even something like that can save it." - KTCK-AM's Dan McDowell of McDowell and Bob Sturm's "BaD Radio" show - on the ESPN anchor stealing the Dallas duo's 6-year-old "Homer Call of the Week" bit for his own radio show.

Not that everyone that matters didn't know already.

    Kinda weak Bob.
What happened to the segment where you listed good college football games to watch this weekend? I am just saying, not too many HSO's.

I agree. There was a time in my life when I actually watched "Yes, Dear". Oh dear... But now that I've seen the light, it's a sad day to see Arrested Development go.

OK, back to Two and a Half Men...

Here is hoping Arrested Development gets picked up by the likes of HBO, of FX...

  4. I have to remind myself that it's just a TV show, because right now I'm very sad.

    Is that gay?

  6. The Stars Game Last Night, was very dissapointing in the fact that I get the feeling that the stars will only play well under certain officiating crews. That is not what should happen, the inconsistency of calling the game (not to mention chopping the game up into little pieces (where nearly 70% of the game is spent on the powerplay) Plus a majority of the calls were weak to begin with)is somthing that the director of officiating should deal with (but probably wont) I love Tippets comment, it conveys a general disdane without being able to be fired. If you listened to Ralph and Razor, they were treating the game as a minor comedy and scoffing at the referees on most of the calls late in the game, when the true face of the game had been revealed. It's sad really, I dont want to be accused of being a homer, but if the officiating would have favored us last night I probably would have grimaced and looked the other way.

  7. What, no Survivor talk? Man, Gary was golden last night. He was getting played about four different ways, but he still found the individual immunity idol and was smart enough to use it when he needed to. No if only he finds out that he needs to confront Jamie about lying to the others about Gary's vote, plus Judd for lying about the idol clue, plus Steph for her saying he was safe.

Gary needs to rely on his personality and presence and try to fashion some kind of new, honorable alliance if he's going to make it to the end.

It would be nice for the holidays to see Baylor in a bowl game and the Aggies sitting at home. Hopefully we'll do our part tomorrow and the Bears will in Columbia as well.

  11. I am truly walking around with my head slumped toward the floor, with Charlie Brown Christmas music playing today.
I've never longed more for one of those damn Neilsen boxes in my house. Who is it exactly that have these rating machines? The fat,(I watch Celebrity Fat Camp) the stupid,(I watch anything Ty the handyman, Ryan, Paula and Simon and Opera are in) and the ugly (I watch anything that convinces me I'm worth anything being this ugly, like the Tyra Banks show).
I will be indebted to Arrested Development forever and am obligated to watch whatever any cast member does from now on!
Rest in sweet peace. Kaw, Ka, Kaw, Ka, KAW!

    no survivor spoilers!

I narrowly escaped reading that before watching it tonight.

  13. You know, if Texas didn't have the #2 spot locked up, I'd be pissed off at Texas Tech for a stupid loss that hurts Texas' strength of schedule rating.

As it is, though, I can laugh at what a fraud that program is. 2nd best team in Texas? Horned Frogs, buddy.

Granted, if TCU loses to UNLV after I post this, I'm going to look deeply stupid, but that's a risk I'm willing to take.

Yep, thanks to LSU the Rose Bowl is a lock now, so Tech's loss doesn't matter. And I would agree with you Observer, but still, TCU did lose to SMU, so I just can't bump them up to #2 status yet. Okie State actually gave Texas a game for about a quarter and a half, which is something no one else in the Big 12 has done all year, so losing to them isn't nearly as bad as losing to SMU.

so your puting ads on your page you effing sellout. you suck

  16. Not only that, but I also get paid to talk on the radio, so I am a double sellout.

    I suck.

  17. That SMU loss may have cost TCU millions of dollars. Argh. Don't remind me.

Speaking of which, I'm trying to figure out why TCU switching from Conference USA to the Mountain West. The competition level and conference respect seems to be about the same. Why couldn't TCU just try to stack its non-conference schedule with Big 12 teams and stick with C-USA? Then they'd have an in-conference rivalry with SMU? What am I missing?

Also, it was sure nice to see that the Giants also know how to lose a game they have no business losing. Geez, they allow 137 yards of offense (not counting return yardage, of course) and roll up 400+ yards. They allow no offensive TD's. Minnesota even gives up a TD and 2-point conversion with less than two minutes to go, very Cowboy-like, but they still come away with a win on the Giants' home field. Amazing, and it's an NFC loss, so that'll help in tiebreakers later. A good day for the Cowboys.

  18. *AND* Washington loses? The stars are aligning ... for Philly?

Sports Sturm, you might want to consider leaving a brief post and open thread over the weekends. That would also lower the expectations on your gigantic Monday and Tuesday posts.

You shouldn't worry about posting on weekdays vs weekends. You are blogging more for you than us, right? So what do you care if fewer readers read weekend posts?
