16 Targets for Witten? Who does he think he is, T.O.? 14 catches? 9 First Downs? Witten is the perfect Tight End for this offense and remains the #1 target for Tony Romo in the crucial spots. And no, Terrell, that is not a bad thing.

9-13 on 3rd Down with 7 first downs is extremely solid. This game may linger for many reasons, not the least of which being that the Cowboys will seldom get a better road passing effort than that one. Austin and Witten absolutely strong games.

SACKS
Sack #1 -3/7/27 SACK ROUSE - 1Q
What Happened This is relatively new idea in the NFL that I love. Bill Sheridan has all of his defenders in the box standing and not declaring whether they are rushing or covering. Also, they are shuffling around so the offensive line has no idea who is where. They call these guys "jokers" because they can be either a rusher or a cover man, and you don't know which until the snap. It is what makes the OLB in a 3-4 scheme so difficult to deal with sometimes because unlike old school football - where body type often showed you what a player was going to do, now players are morphing positional styles so that we have this versatility. Anyway, once Romo tries to sort through the chaos the Giants are showing, they snap it and then the blitz comes in waves. Only 5 actually come, but the threat of the other guys can be just as dangerous because you still have to account for them. The Cowboys have this blitz pretty well picked up, until Rouse the safety delays and then comes, and he gets Gurode to lose sight for just a second and squeezes by. Romo, usually standing tall in the blitz, looks like he was not thinking of anything besides the blitz, as he falls almost before the rush gets to him at all. This one goes to Gurode.

Sack #2 - 3/G/9 SACK SINTIM 2Q
What Happened Again, playing on the road and in a loud stadium is all part of the fun of doing this for a living. You really have to be dialed in with 11 guys knowing their assignments. Well, the Cowboys obviously had a mental bust here, and it regards a simple DE end rusher in Clint Sintim. You can afford to occasionally let a DB run free, but if a DE runs free, I have to assume somebody screwed it up. Doug Free blocks down toward Davis, so was he expecting TE help? Witten heads off into route, so I have to assume signals were crossed. Until I figure it out, and I have calls in, I must give this to Doug Free for a mental bust.
UPDATE: After further review (and a call from my trusted man-in-the-know, we may have to take Free off the hook. The idea here is that Free is blocking left like the entire line, so this suggests that they are merely following the orders of their QB to slide left to protect the blitz. Then, Free, if he has 2 choices is coached to get the inside guy, and leave the unblocked guy to the QB. The other consideration is that this is that hated "empty" backfield, and therefore there is no RB to help grab Sintim. All of this suggests this sack is 50% Garrett/50% Romo. Sorry, Doug.
The Rankings so far in Sacks Allowed among the OL: Adams - 6, Davis - 4, Gurode - 3, Colombo - 2, Free - 1, Kosier - 1.

Hey Bob,
ReplyDeleteGreat stuff.... ummm very in depth...
What I was checking was, with the new DMN partnership (Obviously another DMN vs ESPN/Dallas move), I thought for sure, a smart move would be to not only announce the partnership but also give a taste of the crossover... maybe a link to your excellent blog (or more)... maybe have some of the writers on the air besides Todd... IDK, but obviously you present a written media for them... seems ready to go.
Also, I relly enjoy the breaking down of Garret... any chance or thought to going back and breaking down Landry's offense and his Flex defenses in the same way? Maybe a special occassional thing?
Anyway, good stuff,
Vaya con Dios
bob, i love this blog. if i'll ever marry a blog, well here we go ;-)
ReplyDeletejust a quick note, your 3rd down season total has an error in either the total INTs or one individual INT is missing.
