In - Vince - Able....Rock Me!

That was a tough game to figure. Not. What was tough to figure was why so many based their thoughts on this game on games they saw in previous years by players who are now playing in various NFL cities. Texas looks fabulous this year. Oklahoma looks like a team that is too young and too green to step up in major college football in 2005. We saw it when Texas played Ohio State and we saw it when Oklahoma lost to TCU and UCLA.

So why did some of you still take OU?

It all seemed too obvious as the game was being played. You know, the game that was decided before halftime?

These two teams are not even close right now, and for Mack Brown, boy, is it nice to hear that said in his favor for once.

Vince Young played a solid game, passing for 241 yards and 3 touchdowns and at times still missed open chances. There, I’ll admit he didn’t make every pass, if you’ll admit that you want to rip a QB that threw 3 touchdowns, won the game by 33 points and hardly made a negative play the whole game. What did you want him to do, win by 60? Jamal Charles looked great when they gave him the ball, but that was only 9 times.

The Texas defense looked great, but Adrian Peterson was nowhere close to what he was supposed to be, and Rhett Bomar looked like a high school QB trying to play with the big boys for the first time. I will give him this much, he can take a hit. But, I am not sure what that has to do with holding Jason White’s jock.

So all in all, Texas looked like the #2 team in the country and Oklahoma looked like a team that is 2-3 and should feel lucky if they work their way back in contention for the Holiday Bowl.

Finally, Texas can ask, “How do you like them apples, Oklahoma?”

Texas – OU by the numbers

For Texas fans, New OU sucks song here …Chance McClain at it again…

Vince Young is beatable. He's got nothing. He can't make any throw other than a 'huck and chuck.' I'd like to see film of him throwing a bullet between defenders. If he is even in Heisman contention, someone will have to make one hell of an argument. Right now he isn't even the MVP for the team. Without the defense, the game is 14 points closer.

If you think Vince Young has got nothing, then OU really has a very BIG bag then. All I know is that the guy keeps winning big games. This calendar year, he's beaten Michigan, Ohio State and now Oklahoma. That speaks for itself. And for anyone to say Vince Young has nothing after winning those 3 games, you're either dumb or just simply a blind Texas hater.

As for those that were picking OU, many of them are simply Texas haters that pick them to lose every week (based strictly on hope alone). If you need any proof of that, just look at last week's blog to see how many actually thought Missouri would beat Texas. Ha! They'll do the same next week against Colorado, etc, etc.

Texas is in the driver's seat now as their win today was more impressive than USC's over Arizona or VA Tech's over Marshall were. So no worries about losing any ground in the polls. Simply put, if Texas wins out, they're in the Rose Bowl, no matter what anyone else does. Now, whether they can actually beat USC? Well, that's a debate that'll have to wait for about 2 more months before it'll be relevant, it's simply too early to know that yet.

i still cant get over the people that still insist vince young is nothing more than a running qb who cant win with his arm. all season he's been winning with his arm over his legs, throwing for 200-300+yrds a game, even against a tough ohio state d.

does the guy throw as well as leinart? no. but id still let the guy qb my team.

Pretty simple..

More experience at every position.
Better Depth.
Better Quarterback Play.

equals a UT Victory. Coming from a Sooner fan, this is what we expected this year. Bomar will be better. The defense will be better.

I am disappointed with the disappearance of AD (Peterson) with all of that time to rest, he can't be a factor?

IT is UT's year.

listen vince is badass, but come on, all he can throw is the fade. he takes to steps back and throws it up. that is not enough on the next level, and im not sure it will be enough against tech. but he is the most dangerous player in the country and you have to take 2 linebackers and a safety to spy him. they will beat tech, but i think vince will have to throw a wee bit better. to beat USC he will either have to be unconscience running the ball or be unconscience running the ball.
out. oh by the way, the aggies are terrible, when does fran get fired? and when do kids stop going to a&m?

You got that right. Fran The Fraud's squad is putting on yet another wonderful exhibition of mediocre football tonight in Boulder. Colorado already has over 500 yards of offense and it's still in the 3rd quarter. Oh well, everyone in Tuscaloosa is laughing their asses off right about now.

Watch that game again, and then say that Texas won the game BECAUSE of Vince Young. The defense won the game, if you want to put it on anyone. Also, try and say that Vince is a good passer...or even a mediocre one.
Texas played an OU team who is as bad as they'll be for 10 years.

No one individual player wins any game. I didn't see Jason White winning games all by himself either. But to say that Vince Young "has nothing" is just flat out stupid. The Longhorns obviously wouldn't be 5-0 without him and he isn't a Heisman candidate for nothing. When you're the QB of a team that beats both Ohio State and OU in the first 5 games of the season, you're obviously doing something right.

Just b/c they'll likely finish #2 in the polls does not guarantee them a spot in the BCS championship game. I would think both FSU & Va Tech have a chance to pass them given their likely higher strength of schedule.

Anonymous said...

If Texas finishes #2 in both polls, they'll finish #2 in the BCS as it's more more heavily weighted toward the two polls this year. Besides, strength of schedule isn't a factor in the BCS any longer and hasn't been since 2003. And even if it was, VA Tech's schedule isn't any tougher than Texas' this year anyway, nor is USC's for that matter.

Sturm,
What a Hell of a Game! Thanks for the plug and as always keep up the amazing work. The folks in the Big-D have some good effing sports radio.

Virginia Tech? Would someone tell me exactly who Virginia Tech has even played so far? Georgia Tech? Please. The only really good team they have on their schedule all year is Miami and even then, they get them at home. And Miami is no better than Texas Tech (at least so far this year) anyway.

I'm sorry, but there is no way their schedule is any tougher than the Longhorns' schedule is. Texas will play more ranked teams this year than Virginia Tech will. And like the other guy said, strength of schedule and "quality wins" are no longer in the BCS equation anyway after they changed the formula after the 2003 debacle.

Yeah, I guess Texas should apologize for beating OU by only 33 points today. That just wasn't impressive enough obviously for some of the doubters out there. Of course that's better than what USC did at home against Arizona or what VA Tech did also at home against Marshall. And the last I checked, OU is still better than either Arizona or Marshall are.

Here's the current BCS formula

The first BCS Rankings for 2005 will be released October 17, then weekly through December 4.

A breakdown of the new components:

I. Harris Interactive Poll (1/3rd)
Replaces the AP Poll. The first poll will be released September 25, then weekly through December 4. A team's score in the Harris poll will be divided by 2,850, which is the maximum number of points any team can receive if all 114 voting members rank the same team as Number 1. (Example: 2,850 / 2,850 = 1.0. If a team receives a total of 114 voting points, an average of 25th place, their BCS quotient of this component would be .04. (1.0 / 25 = 0.04).

II. Coaches Poll (1/3rd)
A team's score in the USA Today poll will be divided by 1,550, which is the maximum number of points any team can receive if all 62 voting members rank the same team as Number 1. (Example: 1,550 / 1,550 = 1.0. If a team receives a total of 62 voting points, an average of 25th place, their BCS quotient of this component would be .04. (1.0 / 25 = 0.04.)

(Better understanding the polls: In both human polls, voting members fill out their own top 25 rankings ballot. Each team receives 1-25 points in reverse order of the way they are ranked. The 25th place team on each ballot receives 1 point, 24th place gets 2 points, 23rd receives 3 points... first place receives 25 points.)

III. Computer rankings (1/3rd)
Six computer ranking systems will participate. The highest and lowest rating of each team will be thrown out and the remaining four will be averaged. The current participating computer rankings are:

Peter Wolfe
Wes Colley
Sagarin
Seattle Times
Richard Billingsley
Kenneth Massey

I think Texas definitely has an edge over VaTech in terms of a likely #2 spot. However, the ACC is clearly better than the Big 12 this year and a potential VaTech-FSU ACC title game could give either one of them the potential to overtake Texas at the end. I am not a "Texas hater", just curious to know what would happen if they both went undefeated. We should now more after the firsts set of rankings are put out next week.

The new coaches poll is pretty much the same. Texas gains on USC and moves further ahead of #3 Virginia Tech. Texas Tech is #11 and Colorado is #24 as far as Big 12 schools go. TCU is up to #26.

congrats texas...

you beat an oklahoma team that is not even close to as good as you...

How is that going to help when you are beat by Colorado and Tech?

not good...

Anonymous said...

the only team left on the texas schedule that has me scared a little as a texas fan is the tech game. as much as i hate to say it, that could be a big upset. i dont see them losing to colorado

Anonymous said...

Yeah, and I'm sure Chris was one of the ones predicting an OU win this week and a Missouri win last week too. Then after Texas blows them both out, he moves on to saying now that they'll lose to Colorado and Tech. Then it'll be A&M later on. If you keep picking Texas to lose every week, you'll eventually be correct. Too bad for you I guess that you've now missed on 12 game predictions in a row...

I guess all of you UT apologists also think that Notre Dame is going to beat USC next week. Keep on dreaming. USC and Matt Leinart are still the best (skill-wise) in the country. Even if UT gets to the Rose Bowl, they'll have no chance. But...whatever makes you UT fans sleep better at night.
At least I can admit that my Aggies suck. I never thought homer-isms could reach so far outside of Austin.

Anonymous said...

boy, those ags and their moral victories...good job Jay, way to base your feelings on how your rival is doing instead of worrying about your own team. hahaha, ags are funny to laugh at.

Anonymous said...

Texas is hopfully looking ahead to the rose bowl, forgetting about another team from out west who are gonna roll into Austin with the best team from Lubbock in over 10 years. Go ahead Texas, buy those airplane tickets to Pasedena and please overlook Tech. I dare you!

Anonymous said...

I agree that Tech may well have their best team in 10 years, but UT happens to have their best team now in over 20 years as well. And let's face it, Texas Tech has only beat one decent team so far after playing basically 4 JuCo teams to start the season. It'll be a very interesting game down in Austin, but Tech still has plenty left to prove that they do indeed belong. Beating Nebraska was a start, but it's still not as impressive as beating Ohio State and wiping out OU as Texas has done so far.

Anonymous said...

I too wonder why Virginia Tech is getting credit for having such a tough schedule to this point. Of their 5 wins so far, exactly zero of the teams they've defeated are currently ranked. Their game this week is against Maryland who is also currently unranked, while Texas is playing #24 Colorado.

If both teams win next weekend and if Virginia Tech is #2 when the first BCS poll comes out next week, I'll really have to wonder where exactly that is coming from. Texas would have more "quality wins" than Va. Tech thru the first 6 games. Either way, I still believe Texas controls their own destiny and the two toughest games remaining on their schedule are coming up in the next two weeks, so we'll know soon enough.

Anonymous said...

At least I can admit that my Aggies suck.

Boy do they ever. And the fact that Texas is rolling this year just makes it all the worse doesn't it? The sooner you get Fran The Fraud out of there, the better off you'll be. I just hope you keep him around so you'll continue to suck for a good while longer. And trust me, nobody is happier about that than the folks down in Tuscaloosa are right now.

Anonymous said...

Folks, it doesn't matter who's number 2 this week in the BCS poll. Just to get number 2 by the final poll of the season, and you play for the national championship.

And don't forget, Va-Tech still has to play Miami and Florida State.
