Top 10 Sports Events of my Cowboys bye Weekend - In no particular order.
- Lewisville BaD Radio Vikings – City Champions. That is right. In another dramatic finish, this time with plenty of controversy, the Vikings held on to win 13-12 over the Buccaneers for the Lewisville 7 and 8 year old city title. Moments before the final gun, a Buccaneers TD was called back for a holding penalty, and the Vikings also scored on a miracle final play of the first half. To call this a fortunate outcome for the Vikings is a vast understatement. They were fortunate, but then again, they made their own good fortune. Congrats to Coach Kevin Murray, and all of the young lads who fought hard for the show (yeah, right). Way to go!
Also, Grubes amused the young kids with his trademark Chipmunk costume. For all of the pictures, Click here ...I dare you.
- Liverpool 2, Aston Villa 0 - Sure, Fernando Morientes is still sparing us to death. Sure, Cisse still looks off from his broken leg of 2004. But, we will take a road win anyway we can get it, and Peter Crouch, despite his goofy look, changed that game. A much needed 3 points for the Reds, as they creep up to #11 on the table.
Other Random Premiership notes: Chelsea must be good, because that is the only way that I could possibly root for Manchester United. ManU showed a great fight on Sunday beating Chelsea, and ending a 40-game streak for Chelski without a loss in the premiership. A dazzling goal, and then they held on for over 60 minutes to win at Old Trafford… Meanwhile, Thierry Henry had a sensational return in a win over Sunderland, with 2 goals, and nearly a third on an amazing bicycle attempt that just missed the far corner. For my money, he is the best striker of the decade. Add the 1998 World Cup with all of his huge strikes for the Gunners and I will take my chances…Somehow Wigan won again. They remain #2 behind only Chelsea. The odds of this are similar to the Arizona Cardinals sitting at 7-1 right now. Wigan has no business this high, and yet they have earned it...
- Stars win at Colorado. Bravo, Marty Turco. 2 wins in 2 games??? Stars only 3 points out of first place, but also only 2 points out of last place. Can they keep it up against Edmonton tonight at the AAC?
My full hockeybuzz.com report here …
I am old school. I don’t need hockey shootouts, and I cringed when hearing of the new rule. I compared it to ending tie basketball games with a free throw competition. Did not like it. But, one month in, I must agree that a shootout at the end of an exciting game is a climactic way to end a game and send everyone home either feeling great or disappointed. Ties did little to result in a feeling one way or the other, but this shootout, despite its inequitable way of deciding a game, does what is intended: provide the fans with a payoff. And I suppose that is what really matters.
- Mavs beat Spurs at AAC in Finley’s return. A fabulous effort that combined great defense, Dirk Nowitzki playing like the great player he can be, Devin Harris playing like a player who needs to be on the floor a whole lot more, and the Spurs looking very beatable. We certainly cannot read too much into this, but as the quote in Bull Durham suggests, “winning. It’s like better than losing!”. Mavs off until Wednesday when they play at Philadelphia.
- Texas Tech buries Texas A&M. This 56-17 was exactly what everyone expected. It almost is not worth my energy to discuss it. Tech wrecks em.
- Rashad Evans wins and highlights a night of wars at the Ultimate Fighter 2 Finale on Spike TV. It was worthy of my time for sure. For a full recap, Click Here …
- My Packers failed again. I really am building character this season. I promise to never take another 10-6 record for granted. Ever. Even without Big Ben and Bettis, the Steelers still roll in, make almost no plays of substance and win rather easily. To think that less than 2 years ago, the Pack were on the doorstep of a Super Bowl (until 4th and 26 and Freddie Mitchell). It feels like the 80’s all over again.
- Virginia Tech was exposed by Miami...I genuinely like Frank Beamer, and therefore root for his program. I was stunned by the thrashing they took at home Saturday night. The beauty of Tech is that they normally kick Miami around, and don’t fear the Canes like the rest of America. So much for that theory.
- Carl Edwards won in Texas to complete the Roush sweep of our fair cities races this year. Edwards, and his trademark back-flip ended a successful weekend at TMS that showcases the sport twice a year now.
- Eagles lose as Terrell Owens tries to single-handedly trash a franchise. I have never been more right about a prediction than I was the day the Eagles acquired this cancer. Now, I think we are safe to assume he is done there. The beauty is that he doesn’t seem to get that 75% of NFL franchises will no longer offer him a contract over 1 year. He has taken this stand, and in doing so destroyed any market value he once had, and therefore could not even get another team to offer the contract he is said to be unhappy with presently.

In the wake of ManU 1, Chelsea 0 The London Times makes fun of Glazer’s commitment to Manchester United …
THE GLAZER HEART BEATS WITH SUCH passion for Manchester United that, on the day that the empire was in greatest peril, not one member of the family bothered to cross the Atlantic. No doubt they watched the match on television, but that was no substitute at all for witnessing the stirring of a mighty beast within Old Trafford.
Whether or not this turns out to be a victory of lasting significance — and only a brave man will rush to predict Chelsea’s decline — this was a magnificent, memorable occasion witnessed by an estimated 750 million viewers worldwide. One that the Glazers should have attended if only to realise how much this great institution can stir the soul. “Caring for the club is done in different ways,” Ferguson said.
Staying at home to watch the Tampa Bay Buccaneers said everything about the devotion of the new owners.
Earlsboro 112, Hanna 2 …
The Hanna High School basketball team can take some consolation: It didn't get shut out. It did, however, lose 112-2 on Friday night to Earlsboro.
Blogging about Coach Fran …
When it comes to bashing Coach Franchione and the Aggies, everyone is getting in on the action. Fran’s struggles have brought particular satisfaction to folks in Alabama, where Fran jilted the Tide to join the Ags.
The Montgomery Advertiser quoted Pat Dye, the former coach at Auburn, as saying of the Aggies, “Lord have mercy, are they pitiful. Alabama people should be saying their prayers that (Franchione is) in Texas. And they need to send him something to make sure he doesn’t come back. Maybe a thank-you note. He is pitiful. You watch them play, it looks like they’ve got lice falling off of them.”

Revo tries to get payroll answers from the Rangers …
Hicks was equally coy when he phoned me back after I'd talked to Daniels.
"The budget will go up, and I suspect it'll be a meaningful amount," Hicks said. "But, as I've said, it's going to be player specific.
"It's a moving picture. We're just not going to give you a number to talk about."
They can play secret squirrel all they want right now. When all is said and done, we'll know the numbers, you can be sure of that.
When you deduct the $9 million Hicks was paying on A-Rod's salary, the Rangers were somewhere in the mid-$50 million range last season and that's simply not going to get it done. Hicks needs to give his new GM a fighting chance.
And now, some college football email:
Hey Bob,
I enjoyed the discussion today about who has the better program... I did some research several weeks ago about this topic and wanted to share it with you. The results start with the 1996 football season through the 2004 football season...
Since 1996 Tech has finished ahead of A&M in conference standings 5 of the past 9 years (better than 50%). A&M only finished higher than Tech in 1997, 1998 and 2004. In 2000 Tech and A&M shared the same conference record. This means that 6 of the past 9 years Tech has finished the same or better than A&M.
In this same time frame- Tech finished with a better overall record than A&M 5 of the past 9 years (including last year) and shared the same overall record with A&M in 2000. Again, 6 of the past 9 years Tech finished with the same or better overall record than A&M.
And as for Gribble's remarks about A&M being better than Tech last year- please let him know that Tech finished 18th in the final AP Poll while A&M did not even crack the top 25... Not to mention they got dusted in the Cotton Bowl while Tech was beating 4th ranked Cal in the Holiday Bowl.
Thanks Sport Sturm!
Shane
And, then this:
First of all, let me tell you my allegiance is to Texas Tech, so it really doesn't matter to me, but I think all these Francione bashers need to tap on the brakes.
Let's compare Bob Stoops to Fran. Stoops is in his 6th year, so his first three recruiting classes graduated last year (if we say it takes most players 5 years to graduate), and are juniors and seniors this year. Granted they had a good year last year, but where are they when they should be loaded with juniors and seniors this year. Stoops came in and Hypl and Jason White (actually 6 year player) were already there. He won a national championship and went to another one with John Blake's players.
Now if you look at Fran, this is his third year, so his recruits are Sophomores, red shirt freshmen and true freshmen. He is still basically playing with R.C. Slocums players. It was generally known that the proverbial cupboard was bare when Fran took over. You have to wait another couple of years to find out how he is going to do. He has been successful everywhere else he has been.
I think the perception is way off for both of these guys.
P1
Charlie
I still have a huge issue with people continuing to drop the level of RC Slocum’s job performance to compensate for Coach Fran tanking. With each loss, they drop Slocum’s players another notch to explain how bare the cupboard was. I don’t buy it, and neither does the NFL. If RC was such a joke, why does he have more players in the NFL than any other Big 12 program? And no, it isn’t all from the mid-90’s. Every draft, the Aggies put plenty in the draft (2005 here )…If RC’s players suck so bad, why are many, many playing on Sunday?

It is a truly sad day for the Packers when Bob's football weenie has to use little league football to get itself moving.
Tech blows out A&M (Sports Sturm treats it as an afterthought) and now we get the privilege of beating OSU and then possible choking the Cotton Bowl away if we lose to OU? I'm not sure I like how this is setting up.
Stoops vs Leach for the Cotton Bowl...I don't like our chances unless Leach wears his Pirate outfit.
But hey, A&M vs UT is a rivalry game right...maybe A&M could cover the 35 point spread?
Bet of the day: Odds are 3-1 that it was either a female or gay cop that arrested those cheerleaders in the bathroom stall.
If RC's recruits were soooooo bad, then why was McNeal BETTER under RC, than he is under Fran?
And I, as an OU fan, do not want to go to the Cotton Bowl. Everything is a beating, the cold, the 10:00am kick off, etc...
If a loss to Tech means the Holiday Bowl, I would be happy with that.
I think Tech clearly proved who the #2 team in the state is on Saturday night. It's a little thing called scoreboard.
As for Virginia Tech, I, like most everyone else, was stunned that Miami so completely dominated them. Marcus Vick looked like a high school QB out there and Miami's defense completely shut VT down. Considering VT's late season meltdowns are nothing new, their #3 ranking was proven once again not to be deserved.
Thankfully the BCS is now completely cleared up for the true top 2 teams to go at it in January as they should.
Brad,
So Bama doesn't deserve a shot?
If I owned Man U., I would freakin' LIVE at Old Trafford. I only got to see the highlights of Man U vs Chelsea. You are right about that goal. I can't believe Fox Sports World didn't show that game. I'm looking forward to Bolton vs Tottenham, at least. My Spurs are having a good year.
Is there any chance at all Tech and TCU could match up in a bowl game this year? That would draw an enormous audience, much more than either would draw separately playing random Pac-10 or lesser SEC teams.
And isn't it time to get back to some "Survivor" talk, now that the show is becoming more watchable? Last week was great. I think the producers are really going the extra mile this season to stir up conflict and make people nasty (the conditions are probably the biggest part of that). Gary doesn't look likely to make it to the end unless he gets recruited by a sub-alliance of Nakum, but not only has he made it a long way, he always seems to be at the very end of any list of who might get voted off in a given week.
I think Steph, Lydia, Rafe and Cindy should form a Final Four alliance. They could convince the three remaining Yaxha's (Gary, Danni and Bobby Jon) to vote off Jamie and Judd, then they've got 4 vs 3 numbers.
Wigan have been impressive this season, it's refreshing to see a proper 'team' in the premiership, one that isn't driven by money and fame alone. Having said that, it was also great to see the mighty red devils give Chelski a good old fashioned spanking - eventhough Fletcher's goal was clearly a cross into the box.
I got stuck outside Villa Park just after the final whistle on Saturday, on my way to a hockey game, and I saw two Liverpool fans getting a good kicking from a crowd of Aston Villa thugs. Good to see that soccer violence is still alive and kicking in Birmingham. I should really have done the decent thing and got out of the car to help them out, the Villa fans, of course.....
Curious: Do the Lewisville Vikings, sponsored by BaD Radio get rings or trophies paid for by the team owners?
Maybe it's one of those leagues where all the teams get trophies, even the team that came in last?
Hey, we're all winners, right Corky?
I hate the P1
bob,
great find on the u2 download....not bad quality either...
what!?! No commentary on the Liberty U running back that had a decent day for the pack?
Come on Bob... you can show a little homer for us. I mean, how oftern is that going to happen!
Please, please Fran apologists. Do not make any comparison between Fran and someone like Bob Stoops who has a National Championship and two championship game appearances. The Ags would kill to have had the last half decade that OU has had. And by the way, don't mention White and Hybl (while forgetting Heupel) and then talk about how Stoops won with John Blake's players. Heupel, White, Hybl, Quentin Griffin, Mark Clayton Torrance Marshall, and Derrick Strait were all Stoops recruits. And many of those WR's OU used to win were Blake recruits, many of whom were playing defensive backs under Blake. Great coaching can take someone else's talent and do more. So stop blaming poor R.C. for Fran's huge shortcomings.
Regardless of the blame, A&M has truly fallen short of the expectations of it's fans and the school administration as a whole.
Additionally from what my Aggie insiders tell me (cue Norm), regardless of what Rhyner says, one more season like this and heads (coordinators) will roll--and maybe as soon as after this season.
I watched every down of the Tech game and I don't wish total failure on A&M, but how in the world can anyone "spin" this season....it's atrocious.
one more season like this and heads (coordinators) will roll--and maybe as soon as after this season.
If the Ags have any self-respect, the D-coordinator will get canned this season. Otherwise they're inviting another year of mediocrity.
Brad,
So Bama doesn't deserve a shot?
Perhaps, but only if they can run the table against LSU, Auburn and Georgia. Do you honestly think they can do that? I don't think they have a prayer of pulling that off.
Considering that Alabama has only one offensive touchdown in their last three SEC games, it's a rather safe assumption they will not run the table against those 3 teams. That's why nobody is taking them seriously in the Rose Bowl debate. I'll be quite shocked if Alabama's perfect season doesn't end this coming Saturday against LSU.
if alabama wins out, they should play in the bcs championship, right?
If Alabama wins out, I'll eat my hat.
Alabama might have more of a case if they actually played even a semi competitive non-conference schedule. The Middle Tennessee State's, Southern Miss' and Utah State's of the world just don't cut it when USC has won at ND and Texas has won at Ohio State.
Plus it wouldn't hurt if their offense could generate more than just one TD against the likes of Ole Miss, Miss St and Tennessee too. No, even if Alabama did win out, they shouldn't be in the BCS title game. But they won't win out anyway so it doesn't really matter. They'll be lucky if they don't lose both of their next two games actually.
Where is the national talk about the ACC being over-rated? Crushing losses by VT, BC and Florida State over the weekend certainly gives fuel to that argument. Oh well, it's the typical coastal bias in play. People in New York have no clue that football goes on anywhere else and the same can be said about those in LA that never see anyone outside of the Pac-10 (which is also quite over-rated).
Dear TO
Thank you so much, I love you. You have done what the Cowboys from the last 7 years could do... Destroy the Eagles franchise. While I will never cheer for you (see the Star incident) and pray there is no chance in Heaven, Earth, or Hell that Jerry would bring you in, I thank you. Have fun watching from your couch this season.
PS I do think your antics will cost you the HOF. Discuss...
Anon...
TO has ZERO chance of HOF... what has he done? what has he won? nada.
Texas and USC have blown out most of the opponents they've played. They also have wins in Columbus and South Bend on their non-conference ledger.
Alabama doesn't have those skins. Not to mention, they've looked less than stellar in wins over Mississippi State and Ole Miss.
So long as USC and Texas run the table, the two top teams in the BCS will be the two most deserving teams to play for the title.
alabama will have beaten #12, 5, 15, 9, if it runs the table and plays georgia in the sec title game. texas will have beaten #10, 22, 13, 22, if it runs the table and plays colorado again in the title game. looks pretty obvious who has played the tougher schedule. bama should be in the bcs title game.
Just because they played a tougher schedule?
How about looking at how badly Texas beats their opponents vs how Alabama plays against theirs?
Also, Texas has already beaten all of those teams, which caused them to drop in the rankings.
IF Alabama beats each of those teams, they will each fall at least 5 spots after losing to Alabama.
That would leave their opponents at #12, #10, #20, and #14.
Still, if they just barely beat those last 3, then it's not really that big of a deal compared to the way Texas has manhandled their opponents other than Ohio State.
another weekend update -
West Wing's live episode was simply t-e-r-r-i-b-l-e.....
Its tired head time watching a real debate much less a mock debate...I fast forwarded straight through the episode.
And Ellen didn't help either.
as an aggie, i am not too happy with the state of the program - but to say that rc left fran with a enough players is just plain stupid. other than terrence murphy, we have not produced anyone of real value to the nfl the last two years. a sixth round pick is not that talented of a player. this year, only reggie and maybe jason carter will be drafted - and neither will go in the first couple of rounds. next year, the only senior with a chance to get drafted on the first day is justin warren - and i doubt that will happen. the bottom line is a&m has had very little upperclassmen talent the last couple of years. and enough about reggie - he was not "better" under rc - he had one good game under rc. last year was, by far, his best year. he has regressed this year, and i don't blame fran for his inability to hit wide open receivers. sure, there have been some drops, but a lot of that goes to the fact that we have four receivers out for the year, and that he throws it 90 miles an hour on five-yard routes. i'm not giving 100% support to fran, but please stop saying that the "cupboard was bare" excuse is bs. the cupboard was bare. anyone who follows the aggies closely knows that.
