Episode: 11 A.B. (After Bob)

Location: Studio

The Open: “My nickname is Sue Bob.” “I’ve always been the sexy one of the family”. Mike Doocy joins Dan and Donovan for this edition of DDD Radio. Doocy is off to the rough start, his computer isn’t working AND TC didn’t ask him what he wanted for lunch on his daily food run. Donovan went to a wedding this weekend while Dan and his wife went to a Murder Mystery Dinner. They were the youngest people there by a decade. They were seated at a table with some seasoned vets of the Murder Mystery Dinner scene. Because of that intertable influence, Dan decided to really try and figure out who the murderer was. He found out that it was Woody, and in typical Dan fashion was feeling really cocky about it. Turns out that 20 of the 25 tables solved it, and Dan and his wife didn’t get it right quick enough. So no free t-shirt or sex for Dan.

12:50 – Cowboys Talk: With the Cowboys blowing the 14 point leave in the 4^th quarter for the first time in franchise history, Dan thinks that the overall view of this game will be different at the end of the year than it is now. Dan also points out that it seems like holding a 7 point lead with 7 or more minutes to go is even harder than having to come back from that 7 point deficit. Questions abound surrounding the play calling at the 2 yard line after the long Witten reception. Most of these questions and complaint are based on 20/20 hindsight. Yes, Romo fumbled but you can’t complain about the play he was trying to make; however, you can complain about him not protecting the football. Regardless, you cannot turnover the ball in that situation. Doocy wonders if that fumble was still weighing on his mind as threw the late game interception with the game tied and a minute remaining. Dan starts to rail on Dez Bryant, saying that he gave up in the second half. What Dan doesn’t bring up is Dez’s leg injury. Doocy is quick to mention the injury, he injured the quad on his first quarter punt return. This brings up the question: Is it better to have a 70% Dez or a 100% Ogletree on the field?

1:20 – Phone Call/Audio: A guy jumps on the side of Dez, explaining that Revis was holding Dez for a majority of the game and points out that Dez is going to be a beast if he stays healthy (obvious). Dan doesn’t want to give Romo a reprieve on the interception. He also questions Garrett play call after seeing an obviously gimpy Dez against Revis. Doocy points out that they Jets had zero penalties all game. In his post game press conference, Romo takes all the blame for his interception, saying that his throw was reactionary and Dez made the right move to keep going on the comeback. Mike Doocy wonders which part of this game Romo will take forward, the first 3 quarters or the last 8 minutes of the 4^th?

1:40 – More Cowboys: A caller brings up the point that the Jets defensive adjustment and play calling on that Romo interception and every drive after the first of the game should not be overlooked.

1:55 – More Cowboys: Dan wants to talk about the Rob Ryan defense, which was surprisingly pretty good despite being Kate Moss thin in the secondary. His patented pre-snap disguises seemed to provide a solid amount of pressure on Sanchez that covered up the deficiency of the secondary. The Cowboys run defense was spectacular against a Jets team that is hard set on running the ball. Dallas gave up 45 yards on 17 Jet carries. Sean Lee had a breakout game, recovering a fumble and intercepting a Sanchez pass. As a fan, you have to be optimistic about the defense and the exotic nature of it. It will be interesting to see how Rob Ryan changes that approach when they play a game against a QB that can pick them apart. Dan was hoping for the narrative that would have had David Buehler kicking an extremely long field goal to win the game.

2:20 – More Cowboys: Concerning Dez Bryant returning punts, Donovan doesn’t think that they have a choice in putting him back there. Donovan also has an issue with how DeMarco Murray tip-toed his way out of the endzone when he returned kickoffs. Back to Dez, Jerry Jones was not happy about Dez returning punts, while Garrett and the coaches obviously want him out there. Doocy points out that because Dez is such a physical player, it might be better not to have him back there. Dan, after ripping on Dez earlier in the show, starts to praise Dez and his Beast Mode ability.

2:35 – Phone Calls: Some guy named Bruce Bruce says that if the Cowboys want to win, they should sit Romo down for the year. Case brings up play clock management and how the Cowboys let the clock go down to the last second before the ball is snapped, thus giving the defense an advantage of knowing when the ball is going to be snapped. Dan heard something last night about Buddy Ryan that he never knew; Buddy was the Jets defensive coordinator in Super Bowl III (the Namath prediction Super Bowl). Sam says that Witten should have been more aggressive in trying to get into the endzone on the long pass where he seemingly was content going out of bounds at the one. Dan starts to talk about his “great” week 1 fantasy victory.

3:00 – Why Today Doesn’t Suck: On this day in 1999, the Cleveland Browns returned to the NFL. Happy Birthday to KiJana Carter, John Fuqua, Vernon Maxwell, Yao Ming, Ralph Neely, Nina Blackwood, Ben Folds, Black on White Camel Toe, Linda Gray and Neil Peart. Spares include Pat Listach, Terry Dehere, Will Fredo Benitez, Ricky Rudd and Deron Cherry.

Location: Studio

The Open: Grubes starts ragging on Bob and his Honduras trip; Dan, Donovan and Mark jump in and compare Bob’s iPhone to Tom Hanks’ volleyball, Wilson. Donovan is hoping for an ACL tear for Aaron Rodgers in tonight’s NFL opener. Stay strong, Bob. Mark Followill demands that interns call him Mr. Followill. Mark is coming off a strong performance yesterday as he took to the streets and did live play by play of life. It was awesome.

12:35 – NFL Talk: Tonight is the first game of the season, featuring the Packers and the Saints. News is coming down the pipeline that Peyton Manning is going to be out for a long time. Arian Foster is more than likely going to miss the season opener on Sunday. Dan questions whether the news of Peyton’s extended absence is reason enough to make the Texans the favorite in that division. The Lions are the en vogue pick to make the playoffs this year; Houston has been that pick for the past 5 years. The Colts are going to be horrible this year. The Chargers are a sexy pick in the AFC, they have a weak division and an elite QB. Dan and Mark throw some confidence on the side of the St. Louis Rams.

1:00 – Homer Call: IT. IS. BACK. Homer Call, Week 1, is upon us:

Georgetown vs. Villanova basketball. “HOYAS WIN HOYAS WIN HOYAS WIN HOYAS WIN HOYAS WIN HOYAS WIN HOYAS WIN HOYAS WIN”

France vs. Italy basketball. They sound impossibly French.

Mark Followill is an entry this year as he yelled “DAGGER!!!” when the Mavs hit a 3 in the playoffs against the Trail Blazers in Game 1 of the series.

Nationals vs. Phillies, bases loaded, Nats down 3, full count, 2 outs. Walk off grand slam. “The Z-Man HAS DONE IT AGAIN!!”

College World Series. Cal vs. Baylor. Cal won and the announcer has an extremely high voice while screaming and then apologizes because he called 2 games the day before.

College World Series. Tampa. This guy is inaudible.

LLWS. Louisiana-Lafayette wins with a walk-off. “Don’t ever count a Cajun out!!” “WE GUNNA WIN IT WE GUNNA WIN IT WE GUNNA WIN IT WE GUNNA WIN IT!!!!”

Louisiana-Lafayette wins. Cal vs. Baylor is the wild card.

1:25 – A Cowboys Press Conference is scheduled for this time.

2:00 – Continued Cowboys Talk: Jason Garrett said that everyone is day to day. It’s not a surprise that he would say that; Jason Garrett is definitely a coach that plays everything close to the vest. Donovan worries about who will stop the run on this defense. Mark brings up the apparent lack of depth on the defense. Ranking the top defenders on the team: Ware, James, Ratliff, Then who? Mark brings up the point that in theory, after a score, with Buehler kicking, opposing offenses will have to go 80 yards every time.

2:20 – Ed Bark: The former DMN writer/critic joins the show to talk TV. He now runs www.unclebarky.com. Dan was watching Channel 5, Saturday night. He enjoys what he’s looking at, physically. Mark points out that, to him, Channel 5 feels like a Tarrant County news station. Ed says that news ratings have dropped significantly over the past 5 years, saying it’s not a lost cause yet.

2:35 – Ed Bark: Mark asks Ed about one of the Mavs game that was simulcast locally and on TNT. The local broadcast got killed locally by TNT. Dan wants to find out if Ed has any insight to the next great tv show. He says that Pan Am looks nice but he doesn’t see it lasting. On Showtime, alongside Dexter, is a show called Homeland that is premiering. He also mentions American Horror Story on FX. The premise sounds standard but it is really well acted and well done. Ed is also looking forward to the return of Dexter and Boardwalk Empire. Dan wonders about what the Walking Dead can do? Is there room for growth? He finishes by saying that he doesn’t think we’ll ever see a non-scripted primetime show top the rankings on the major networks.

3:00 – Why Today Doesn’t Suck: On this day in 1900, Galveston, Texas was hit by a hurricane that killed 8,000 people. Happy Birthday to Crème de la Face, Maurice Cheeks, L.C. Greenwood, Latrell Sprewell, David Arquette, Sid Cesar, Pink, Heather Thomas and Jonathan Taylor Thomas. Spares include Clarence Witherspoon, David Merrit and Henry Rawlings.

Cowboys Press Conference

The Open: “Bob, does it hurt?” “If you’ve had sex with anyone other than yourself in the last 10 years, you need to get tested.” The Little League World Series is throwing off Dan’s DVR. Such a first world problem. The guys wonder who actually watches the LLWS and how much money does it make. It can’t be much. Dan has a news story of a teacher in Murphy, Texas, for being a creep and playing the Mommy/Baby game with kids in school. He put diapers on them. He also had a cage in his home in which he’d dress as a baby and crawl inside. The lock on the cage was activated by someone on the internet. This is why you don’t hire male kindergarten teachers.

1:00 – Aaron Schatz: The Editor-in-Chief of the heralded FootballOutsiders.com joins the show. Last year they predicted that health, offensive line and age would be the Cowboys downfall. It happened.

1:15 – Ok, Now He’s On: Aaron says that this year’s book was extremely hard to put together due to the lockout and condensed free agency period. The Football Outsiders prediction for the Cowboys is 8 wins, but personally, Aaron thinks that is a little low. Two key changes he sees for the positive are the addition of Rob Ryan and the youth movement along the offensive line. That being said, he also believes you need a blend of experience and youth on an offensive line. He refers to the 49ers last year who drafted 2 linemen early in the draft, when he says that it’s a long term move with little short term positive impact. Talk then moves to the strange drop off in production from Mike Jenkins and the Cowboys defense as a whole. Because this drop off played a huge role in the Cowboys win total prediction, he says it’s hard to predict if that was a fluke or a trend. Turnover ratio is a big deal for the Cowboys and Aaron points out that that is a hard stat to predict. Basically, the more sacks you get, the more fumbles you’ll cause. FO is really high on the Eagles this year, as to be expected. The Vick factor creates so many opportunities for the skill position players for the Eagles. Aaron believes that the Eagles’ offensive line and line backers prevent them from being a true “Dream Team”. FO predicts that, unlike recent history, there will be a large amount of repeat teams in the playoffs this year. This is also due to the lockout and the lack of offseason contact some of the fringe teams are used to having between coaches and players. In the AFC, they have the Colts declining, and that was before the recent news of the Manning neck concern. Aaron likes what the Patriots have done; they went 14-2 last year with a defense made up of 24 and 25 year olds. That defense can only get better. What they have done right centers around the draft and using older players to fill holes, not be the foundation.

1:40 – Fight Night: Corona Fight Night is tomorrow at the Village Country Club. Pacifist v Fighter. Vegetarian v Meat-Eater. MMA v Hockey. Chick v Chick. Heavyweight v Heavyweight. More. Fights start at 5:50.

2:00 – Audio: Philippe Sederos “Come in your face”. Once again, Jim Knox strikes again. He found Rick Carlisle, after he threw out the first pitch, at the Rangers game last night. He called him Rich Carlisle, then corrects himself and sounds like he says “Carlisle” with a tranquilizer dart in his neck. He proceeds to ask him if it’s been non-partying for Carlisle since the Finals.

2:20 – The Tom Grieve Show: The Red Sox won game 2 of the series last night, getting to Colby Lewis early and never looking back. This is an important stretch for the Rangers and they can’t afford to have outings from Colby Lewis like that. By the end of the Chicago series, the travelling and intensity of the previous Angels serious really took its toll on the team. Tom’s take on Jared Weaver’s new contract extension for 5 years and $85 million: He says that Weaver is the kind of guy who you hate when he’s not on your team, but after Weaver took less money to stay in Anaheim, Tom thinks of him in a better light. Tom thinks that the impact that contract has on C.J. Wilson is negligible at best. Tom is obsessed with Fantasy Football.

The Open: “Poor Meg. She got a worse deal than that no armed baseball player, Bucky LeGrange.” Dan is a severe creature of habit. Part of that includes the way they sit in the studio and on remotes. That being said, since Bob is leaving, Donovan took Bob’s seat at the remote. This has upset Dan’s chi. Bob was happy about watching the Bears last night with Cutler, Marion Barber and Roy Williams on the field together, forming a Dream Team! Ron Jaworski would not shut up last night about Barber’s short yardage skills. He obviously didn’t watch any film. The Chicago papers actually believe they have a true number one receiver now in Roy Williams. Silly Bears.

1:00 – Cowboys Talk: The Cowboys have added a fourth kicker into the mix, Shayne Graham. He went 12 for 12 with the Patriots last year, yet he is still a kicker that wasn’t employed before this. Dan is worrying about the Shayne Graham distance question. In 2009, he was 2 for 4 from 50 yards and out.

1:20 – Donovan Interviews a Cowboy: He interviewed the aforementioned David Buehler. He has never dated a cheerleader but is dating a former Hooters waitress. He scored decent on his SATs. He’s somewhat versed in Ebonics. He lettered in 3 or more sports in high school. He confirms the black guys in the shower theory. The guys wonder how they forgot David Buehler in their list of over-personalitied local athletes.

1:40 – Sports Business: Bob saw some advertising for MLS on NBC during Sunday Night Football. NBC will air some MLS games over the next 3 years with most of them being shown on Versus. The deal is worth $10 million, which is tiny in comparison to the NFL but a giant leap for the MLS. The UFC has signed a $100 million a year deal for 7 years with FOX. There will be around 4 bouts a year. This a giant leap for the UFC.

2:00 – Gay Not Gay: Is it gay to have “<3s” and things surrounding your girlfriends name when she calls on your phone? Yes. Is it gay to respond for you and your buddy when both were invited to a party? Not gay. Is using a straw at a restaurant gay? Not gay. Is it gay to buy some linen pants for your buddy because he said they looked comfortable? Yes.

2:20 – Rangers Talk: C.J. Wilson was dominant last night as the Rangers beat the Red Sox in the first of four games, 4-0. Colby Lewis takes the bump against Jon Lackey tonight, both 11 game winners, even though Lackey has a 6+ ERA. Mike Napoli hit a 3 run home run last night and continues to be the hottest hitter in baseball since the All-Star Break. It’s still amazing how the Rangers pulled the under the table deal with the Blue Jays to get Napoli from the Angels. Napoli has passed the eyeball test when it comes to Rangers you want up at a crucial time in the game. C.J. Wilson is adding more and more money to his new contract with each start.

3:00 – Why Today Doesn’t Suck: On this day in 1775, Britain’s King George III declared the American colonies in rebellion. Happy Birthday to Mike Boddicker, Rex Grossman, Destination Tonsils 2, Sonny Jurgensen, Rik Smits, Julio Franco and Jay Mohr.

BaD Radio - Recap - 8/22/11

Monday 8/22/11

The Mix: “Bad weekend at the poll?” – Bob, regarding Norm’s absence.

The Open: “Does this guy know how to party or what?” “Live from the studio, here’s Big Mac and the Sturminator.” Dan is back from his vacation just in time for show number 3000! Dan parked in the parking garage and made the walk through smoker’s alley, he has no idea how people can stand outside in this heat and get some sort of thrill out of smoking. The three things that you don’t want to do while mowing your lawn in this heat is smoke, drink coffee and eat a praline. Somehow the show survived Dan’s week long hiatus where he was on the Cleveland float at the Jim Thome 600^th home run parade. Dan’s aunt has a new guy friend; he was introduced to this new love interest as a “Sports DJ” in Dallas. Saturday night, Jake had a graduation party and Grubes made them find out the dress code to know if he could wear his basketball shorts. Grubes proceeded to be a no-show. Dan was there. He wasn’t there to get wasted; he wasn’t there to hook up. He was just the old guy in the corner.

12:40 – Cowboys Talk: BREAKING: Recent happenings in the NFL, the Raiders have selected Terrelle Pryor in the 3^rd Round of the Supplemental Draft. In other news that no one really cares about, Dan got his new Cowboys’ notebook for the season. It’s blue. The starters played a good amount of the first half last night, which was nice. The intriguing part is that Kitna only played one series. Some reasons that might be the case: We already know what he’s got, they’re being cautious of his recently hurt back or is Stephen McGee playing a lot to knock Kitna off the roster or is he playing a lot to see if he’s worthy of the Cowboys keeping him on the roster?

12:55 – More Cowboys Talk: Back to the Stephen McGee discussion, Bob brings up that the Cowboys this preseason, have made a conscious effort to usher in a youth movement. Dan thinks that McGee has looked good and has the ability to “make all the throws”. Bob thinks that McGee doesn’t really have the QB basics to be able to drop back, make the reads and make the right decision. Kitna can do that but he doesn’t have the arm to make the throws; which is why he’s a backup in the league. For the Cowboys, it’s a matter of what type of QB you want in the off chance that Romo gets hurt. McGee missed an open Poots in the endzone on a 2-minute drive. Bob feels that the worst part of 2010 for the Cowboys was that there were so many veterans who were contending for their jobs. It seems like that mindset has changed with Garrett taking the reins.

1:20 – Even More Cowboys Talk: The game yesterday was the first time Bob has taken his son to a pro football game. He reiterates a common thought about going to a game versus watching at home, saying that it’s harder to break down a game and what is happening on every play. One thing that was easy to see at the game was how the first team secondary was confused and outmanned by the San Diego WRs. Dan continues to wonder that if Rob Ryan is so great than why isn’t he a head coach somewhere? The defense needs to learn these schemes very quickly. But they have a little leeway looking at the first few weeks of the schedule you go against the Jets, San Francisco and Washington; not the most elite passing attacks in the league. Some positives from last night and this entire preseason has been the youth movement on the offensive line. Tyron Smith is going to be a dominant force for years to come. Phil Costa and Bill Nagy, undrafted and 7^th round respectively, have made strong showings. Bill Nagy has all the “lunch pail” descriptions that lead you to believe that he has the early lead. Regardless of what happens, the line will be much younger this year.

1:40 – Short Segment: Some Cowboys wrap up. Dan loved Felix. Backup guard Jeremy Parnell might have some potential. Sam Young is not ready to start. Lonyae Miller had a pretty stout block on blitz pickup but followed it up with a fumble. Fellow running back Phillip Tanner had his helmet ripped off and then ran for a touchdown, but it was called back because the rule states that once the helmet pops off the play is blown dead. Dan hates this rule. He also doesn’t eat meat. Cris Collinsworth was looking at his 2007 scouting report to say that Leonard Davis was a good player and that Bob Sanders was Polamalu-like. Bob Sanders, who has played in 9 of his last 48 games. Dan thinks that the trailer for Contagion and thinks it looks better than Rise of the Planet of the Apes.

2:00 – Bob’s Game Changing Announcement: Bob is leaving the show for awhile, most of September, in order to go to Honduras so they can adopt a young boy. He and his wife started this process over 30 months ago. This is pretty awesome! Their first choice was to try to adopt from Guatemala, but Guatemala is closed off to international adoptions. Until they have custody and he is a US citizen, nothing is 100% set in stone. As soon as they get there, he becomes their son, but he can’t travel internationally for 4 to 6 weeks.

2:20 – More Adoption Talk: When you look at the show as a whole, Bob being gone for a month is not a huge deal. Dan is proud of Bob and what he’s doing with his life. The start of this endeavor took place when Bob went on a Mission Trip in 2006. The young boy they are adopting just turned 5 years old, they wanted the adopted child to be younger than their own kids but they didn’t want a baby because older kids don’t get adopted as frequently. Once he’s here, he’s not a charity case; he’s part of the family. Another aspect of this is figuring out how his children are going to react to the new addition; this is another reason for going away for 4 to 6 weeks. This will be the longest period of time Bob has been away from this job.

2:40 – Rangers Talk: The Rangers hit a bit of a tailspin to finish up their 10 game road trip, yet they still went 7-3 and increased their lead over the Angels in the West. Derek Holland continues to baffle with the extreme nature of his inconsistency. He’s polarizing in the sense that social media has allowed us a detailed looked into the personalities of some of these athletes that we would never see otherwise. Holland is goofy and when he’s winning, it’s great, but when he’s losing, we blame it on his “lack of focus”. It’s unfair. It used to be the case that if you pander to the media, you’ll have a larger leash. But if you become part of the media, you better be performing on the field. It’s a new level of the media/player dynamics. Damn, he’s got a great upside though.

3:00 – Why Today Doesn’t Suck: Happy Birthday to Ray Burris, Paul Maguire, Paul Molitor, Bill Parcells, Irritable Bowel Syndrome 2, Carl Yastrzemski, GTA, Norman Schwarzkopf, Sydney Williams and Kristen Wiig. Spares today are Terry Catledge, Wes Chandler and Darren Jackson. RIP to Leni Riefenstahl and Huey Newton.
