BaD Radio - Recap - 2/24/11

Thursday 2/24/11

Episode: 2879

Location: Studio

The Mix: “You ever played the Fart Trumpet?” – Bob “Noooooo.” – Norm

The Open: “Lookin' to get back up on that pogo stick.” Happy Flag Day in Mexico, Hermanos. With the Homer Bowl 11 today, Bob needs to brush up on his Homer Bowl trick (similar to his Super Bowl trick). There need to be a DVR that automatically records car chases, no hitters and goalie fights as they happen.

12:35 – NBA Trade Deadline: In Bob’s perfect world, Dan has to anchor around-the-clock coverage of the NBA Trade Deadline. At one point a few years ago, it seemed like Baron Davis was one of the better players in the league when they beat Dallas in the first round of the playoffs. The Bee-Beard can be deceiving. Now he joins the Cleveland Cavaliers after being traded from the Clippers; his last great play in a Clippers uniform was throwing a pass out of the sunroof of a Kia as Blake Griffin jumped over the hood and dunked it. The Mavs are being linked to J.R. Smith and Tayshaun Prince this morning. It’s doubtful that anything will materialize between the Mavs and those players; but like every year, the Mavs are always in trade discussions.

12:55 – Homer Bowl: The time is upon us when possibly unknown sports broadcasters will have their name immortalized in the record books.

3rd Place – Boston High School Football: “NUTS AND BOLTS, WE GOT SCREWED!” The 3 Minute Mark.

2nd Place – Arkansas High School Football: “AND THER’ AINT NO FLAG!”

1st Place – Florida Atlantic announcer Dave LaMont: “And I’ll fight anyone of you if you want to.” Good luck getting this guy on the air.

1:30 – Jesse Holley: The Dallas Morning News has petitioned Bob to write up a breakdown of every Cowboy on the 53-man roster. His latest entry was reality star turned special teams contributor Jesse Holley, check out the write-up here.

2:00 – Tom’s Oscar Opinion: In a wheels off moment, Tom said that Inception won’t win Best Picture because it already won with Dances with Wolves. Listen to that here. Then in Why Today Doesn’t Suck, Grubes makes a funny.

2:20 – Brad Richards: How does Brad Richards affect the Dallas Stars at Monday’s trade deadline? A few months ago, it was a safe bet that Brad was going to re-sign with the Stars before he hits free agency at the end of the year. The lack of ownership will limit what the Stars will be able to offer; while it could be market value, it won’t be anywhere near what some of the big boys can offer. It will be his last run at free agency and he’ll be the top free agent on the market; all these signs point to him going elsewhere at the end of the season. That brings trades into the picture. Dallas will be looking for a deal – similar to what the Texas Rangers did with Teixeira – in which they get a lot of young talent and build for the future. A likely dance partner in a trade would be the NY Rangers, but they’re also the team likely to spend a lot of money on him at the end of the year via free agency. It depends on how much the NY Rangers think Richards can help them in a championship run over the next 2 months.

2:40 – Evan Grant: Reporting from Surprise, AZ, Evan Grant reports on the Rangers first intra-squad game. Mike Napoli grounded into a double-play on a 3-0 count. The trade is a bust… Evan’s lineup guess: Kinsler, Andrus, Hamilton, Beltre, Cruz, Young, Moreland, Torrealba, Borbon.

3:00 – WTDS: On this day in 1982, Wayne Gretzky scored his 77th goal of the season, breaking the record for most goals in a single season. He ended up with 92. Happy Birthday to Terry Bowden, Vince Ferragamo, Mike Fratello, Jeff Garcia, Floyd Mayweather, Eddie Murray, My Daughter went Black and Never Came Back, Kristen Davis, Steve Jobs, Philip Knight, Edward James Olmos, Abe Vagoda and George Thorogood. Spares include Tom Burleson, Nick Esasky and Paul Gruber. They didn’t get to the RIP’s but Mitch Hedberd was born on this day and is now dead. Genius.

BaD Radio - Recap - 2/17/11

Thursday 2/17/11

Episode: 2874

Location: Alberta

The Mix: Dan hasn’t missed a second of Stars hockey in 8 years… And Rhads is losing his voice after 3 days on the air; this doesn’t bode well for the 162 game Rangers schedule.

The Open: Dan sleeps in the nude and for this floor right here I went with the Bolivian Wormwood. The guys spend about 10 minutes trying to name the 10 Provinces and 3 Territories of Canada. Yup. Canada is definitely rubbing off on them. An update on Dan’s hotel room-Larry David-blinking and beeping crosswalk outside the window story, he bought an adult film on the pay per view because he didn’t have internet. $16.99 for Eskimo Porn. “Title Not Listed” showed up on the bill; that’s even worse than having the title listed. Now the lady behind the desk’s imagination jumps straight to the weirdest title. Thus is the life of Dan. Also, they say some nice things about Tom.

12:40 – Canada Stories: The guys rave about the atmosphere of hockey in Calgary; it’s an all encompassing experience. Bob was asked last night if he thinks the Stars will make the playoffs; the short answer, “I don’t like what I’m seeing right now”. Sometimes trying as hard as you can isn’t good enough and the Stars seem to be living that. If the playoffs started today, they would be in; but the recent slide is not boding well for the future.

12:55 – Ted Thompson: Former SMU Mustang and current GM of the Green Bay Packers joins BaD Radio. Post-Super Bowl, they were back at work looking at combine reports on the following Tuesday. There is no rest for a GM. Bob humbly apologizes for the criticism of Ted in the past; as a GM, Ted constantly reminds himself that the fans who criticize are usually the ones who care the most. Bob is curious if Ted Thompson got a chance to see the 30 for 30 covering SMU, he hasn’t seen it.

1:15 – Homer Call: A special Jack Edwards Edition of Homer Call to fill in the gap between the end of the Homer Call Playoffs and the Homer Call Super Bowl. A former SportsCenter anchor turned Boston Bruins announcer and a major homer. Clip 1, Clip 2, Clip 3.

1:45 – Bonus Ralph Strangis: Ralph’s 5 places every hockey fan should go: Edmonton, Calgary, Montreal, Vancouver (more for the city rather than the stadium) and San Jose. Dan thinks the U.S. should be able pick and choose what parts of Canada it wants, Vancouver being one of them.

1:55 – Joe Nieuwendyk: The Stars GM joins his favorite radio hosts that get to go on a road trip with the team that he is the General Manager of. Unfortunately, my internet stream went out so I can’t expand any further. Just a guess, he probably wants the Stars to continue playing hard and injuries have been a problem.

2:20 – More Ralph: Ralph re-joins the show again and talks about the horrible placement of the press box at the AAC; it’s hard to do hockey play-by-play from 200 feet away. Dan and Donnie were roaming around the stadium last night and ran into some drunken girls. They think that Dan is sexy and Donnie is from Arkansas and think that Canada is the best country because they don’t have war or the Dallas Stars.

2:40 – Ralph Sticks Around: Donovan has never seen “Slapshot” and Dan is trying to get a copy of it tonight so Donnie can give a movie review tomorrow. “Slapshot” is funny but it’s not timeless funny, IMHO. Ralph saw Jaws 22 times in the theater, without drugs. Ralph was with Minnesota when they moved to Dallas and like Art Modell, Norm Green is hated in Minnesota. Because Ralphie didn’t have a large role with Minnesota, he’s not as hated in that area.

3:00 – WTDS: Argument ensues about the greatness of the Vancouver night-life. On this day in 1865, Columbia, South Carolina burned as Union forces took over. Happy Birthday to Sean Bass, Jim Brown, Michael Jordan, Dennis Green, Brothers Bangin’, Tommy Moe, Buddy Ryan,

BaD Radio - Recap - 2/10/11

Thursday 2/10/11

Episode: 2869

Location: Studio

The Mix: Brazil is fast becoming the top economy in the world; their export of Chiclets is second to none. Norm is going to punish some Brazilians with love making on his upcoming trip.

The Open: Listen to Bob’s exaltation of pure joy in a Double Rainbow-esque moment on this video that his wife took at Super Bowl 45 of the final play. Yes, it is a video of the video board. Give her a break.

12:35 – Sean Payton: Just so you know, if your computer has a virus and it sends an email to Dan, don’t send him another email saying you’re sorry but your computer had a virus. That’s just more emails for him to delete. Now to the rumor, it’s floating around out in the mediasphere that Sean Payton is being hired as the GM of the Cowboys. It all started when he was shopping for a house in Dallas; turns out he’s just moving his family back here. Still, that seems odd that a Head Coach is moving his family out of the city in which he coaches; even more so seeing as though it’s New Orleans and he is such a huge part of that city. He apparently asked the Saints if he could maintain his residence in Dallas, but the Saints thought it would be better for the community if he was in New Orleans. He’s getting some backlash from New Orleans. Here’s an article about it.

1:00 – Homer Call: In this edition of Homer Call, the top two vote-getters will move on to the Finals to join the other four already in. The Finals will be held two weeks from today, with next week being the Pro Bowl of Homer Call. This call from Arkansas high school football overwhelmingly moves on. As well as this high school soccer call from Jesuit. High School broadcasters bring the noise.

Breaking News: Josh Hamilton has reportedly signed a 2 year contract for $24 million. He’ll be here through 2012.

1:20 – Chris Arnold/Prince Concert SNAFU: Over Super Bowl weekend, Prince was scheduled to perform in a tent where Reunion Arena used to be. Because of weather it was moved to the Intercontinental Hotel; well, the concert never happened and emcee and promoter, Chris Arnold (the Ticket’s own), spearheaded the whole thing. There is still a cloud of mystery as to why Prince didn’t play. Some are saying he never showed up to Dallas; some are saying that he was at the hotel but did not get paid his $1.5 million up front. Check out this article.

1:40 – More Former Ticket Personalities in the News: The news surrounding Mayor Pro Tem, Dwaine Caraway, has taken over the local and national news cycle. Richard Hunter got pushed away from Michael Vick by his entourage at the ceremony after he tried to confront Vick. He also showed up at City Hall to confront Caraway. Hunter rescued one of Vick’s former “bait dogs”. Check out the video.

2:00 – NFL Talk: Since Aikman, the Dallas Cowboys have had 13 quarterbacks start a game. Conversely, the Green Bay Packers had lightning strike twice with Brett Favre and now Aaron Rodgers. They went from one Super Bowl winning QB to another Super Bowl winning QB with no one in between; a very rare feat in the NFL. Some other similar correlations: the Chicago Bears Middle Linebackers (Butkus, Dent, Urlacher), Los Angeles Lakers Centers (Wilt, Kareem, Shaq). It just seems odd that certain teams seem to be able to replace Hall of Famers with Hall of Famers at the same position.

2:25 – Donovan’s Movie Review: “Jaws” is the movie de jour as Donovan continues his series of “Movies White People Love”. 9 out of 10 people on IMDB rate “Jaws” the #1 Steven Spielberg of all time. Donovan is obviously that person. He says it might be better if he saw it in 1975, but this movie had major “meh-factor”. He thinks the fact the Chief Brody was a grade-A punk until the shark was about to eat his ass, was too absurd. He ranks it worse than “Fight Club”; it is 9th of 12 movies he’s watched. The next movie on his plate is “Braveheart”; he HAS to like “Braveheart”.

2:40 – Quick Hits: Bob is amazed at the amount of backlash Donovan gets for his movie reviews. Let it be known that Donovan does not only watch Tyler Perry movies. In other news, Jerry Sloan is out as the coach of the Utah Jazz, ending the run of the longest tenured coach in the NBA. With Jeff Fisher leaving the Titans in the NFL, the top guys in each league are now done. Tony LaRussa, the St. Louis Cardinals Manager, is now the longest tenured coach of the four professional leagues.

3:00 – WTDS: Consensus is that Donovan would like “Jaws” more if Chris Tucker was the voice of the shark and it was a Great Black Shark. In 1981, the Las Vegas Hilton hotel was set ablaze by a cook. Happy Birthday to Lenny Dykstra, Darryl “Moose” Johnston, Greg Norman, Mark Spitz, Front Desk Lisa, Yin-Yang and the Oriental Gang Bang, Vinny Thompson, Elizabeth Banks and Laura Dern. Spares are Ally Sherman, Dennis Gentry, Wayne Gandy, Lenny Webster and Jayhawk Owens. RIP to Roy Scheider.

BaD Radio - Recap - 1/27/11

Thursday 1/27/11

Episode: 2859

Location: Studio

The Mix: Hi, Norm. Bye, Norm. This will be a cheerleader free Super Bowl because the Steelers and Packers are eye-candy free teams. Also, Phyllis from The Office was a former NFL cheerleader. Yeah…I know.

The Open: All this medical technology and we can’t even fix a horse’s bones? Day 19 of the Dan in a Suit Flipbook. More NFL cheerleader talk (scratching head). Now marriage contract talk; Dan pines for a day when he can see couples sign marriage contracts that can be renewed or dropped after 10 years. It would keep spouses from mailing it in on the fitness side.

12:40 – Troy Aikman Talk: On the heels of a recent D Magazine story on the former Cowboys Quarterback. Bob talks about the idea that, though Troy is one of the more recognizable people in Dallas and a Cowboys legend, no one really knows the real Troy Aikman. Troy basically had the perfect career; he elevated his play in the most important games, he retired as a Cowboy and had perfect timing in getting his broadcasting job. There’s no one like Troy. It’s a very interesting and in-depth article; give it a read.

1:00 – Homer Call: Two lucky calls will advance to the next round of the playoffs -- The Finals. Boston High School Football makes its way down south and into the finals with this call. Go to the 3 minute mark. Joining the Beantown Crew will be this call made during a Maryland Field Hockey match.

1:20 – Short Segment: While Bob was watching some Senior Bowl workouts, the booth threw it down to a “sideline” reporter and she says “Guys, I have nothing. Sorry to disappoint.” Idiocracy. And here is audio of a little girl who was terribly distraught that the Bears lost against the Packers.

1:30 – Deion “Primetime” Sanders: The late, the great Deion Sanders joins BaD Radio again to produce some audio gold. Deion and Snoop Dogg are teaming up to host the Snooper Bowl, a youth football tournament held around the Super Bowl. Deion has a great idea and needs Bob and Dan’s help; www.primetimefundraiser.com He’s hosting a star studded party at his home and needs help raising money and would like BaD Radio to broadcast live from the party. We’ll see if management will let this happen. Deion, in order to be prepared for a possible Hall of Fame induction, called upon Emmitt Smith to give him some insight on what to expect, the nuance of whole presentation.

1:55 – More Primetime: Deion sticks around to talk about “Woodcock” and working with the guys on the NFL Network. He says that they don’t rehearse anything on the highlights show and they’re just a bunch of guys up there loving what they do and having fun. It’s obvious. Referencing the Jay Cutler situation, Deion says “perception is, he quit; reality is, he may have been hurt”. He is emphatic about the point that perception and reality is more often than not completely different. The perception of Deion was that he avoided tackling; the reality is it never hurt his team. Many players have been hurt but visibly showed that they wanted to go back in the game, thus giving a better perception to the fans. We never got to see the injury or Cutler begging to get back in the game so the perception was that he quit. Dan wants to see Deion’s toe. Here’s confirmation that the toe picture was not doctored. Deion’s Toe live in studio.

2:30 - More on Deion’s Toe: There was some perception late in his career that he was a wimp because of “Turf Toe”. Turf Toe is one of the most misunderstood injuries in all of sports; it’s one of the more painful injuries out there and is a game ender for anyone at a speed position. Thanks Dan for peer pressuring Prime Time into showing the toe to world. In other news, Tom’s middle name is Frederick. The more you know.

2:40 – Ranch Report: David Moore, once again, joins the show from sunny Green Bay. Dan still has no idea what the point of David Moore being in Green Bay is. Patience Dan, there will be ample coverage of what David is doing starting Sunday. Regarding what “final say” when it comes to the draft means, Garrett doesn’t understand what the big fuss is about because the Head Coach always has the deciding vote. But everyone in the room gives their opinion and makes their case. David thinks at the Cowboys current draft standing, they should stay put and get either a) a cornerback or b) a defensive tackle, in that order.

3:00 – WTDS: Mike is broadcasting from a pedicure chair. On this day in 2001, 10 people died in a plane crash outside of Denver. One year ago today, the iPad was introduce by Steve Jobs and J.D. Sallinger died a year ago. Happy Birthday to Chris Collinsworth, Chocolate Gozongas, Dave Manson, Matt Stover, Bridget Fonda, Keith Olbermann, Patton Oswalt and Mimi Rogers. The spares would be Frank Cornett, Eric Wedge, Tom Trebelhorn and Phil Plantier.

BaD Radio - Recap - 1/19/11

Thursday 1/20/11

Episode: 2854

Location: Savoye at Vitruvian Park

The Mix: John Rhadigan is the new play by play guy for the Texas Rangers TV broadcast; get your kneepads on.

The Open: I just hope we are in agreeance that this war should go away. Day 14 of the Dan in a Suit Flipbook. How about a hypothetical to start the show? Bob vs Dirk. 1 on 1. Game to 15. Can Bob make 3 points? If he wins, he trades houses with Dirk; if he loses, he must grow his hair out AND mow Dirk’s grass for a year with a push mower. There is no way he could score on Dirk.

12:35 – Mavs Talk: The Mavericks ended their 6 game losing streak with a win over the Lakers last night. Hot shooting, increased energy and some much needed defense all played a part in this good (not great) win. You must be cautious about looking too much into this win for the lone fact that the Mavericks had hot shooting nights from Terry, Kidd and Marion; though very capable of each having a big shooting impact on a game, it’s rare to have them all ‘on’ in one game. The guys start to discuss the Center Formerly Known As Brendan Haywood; he got his contract extension (mainly because the Mavericks had no other option at that point) and seemingly decided to mail in this season. This just reinforces the fact that Tyson Chandler is the biggest off-season acquisition for Dallas in a long time.

12:55 – Homer Call Playoffs: Find out who will join Jesuit and a lot of Oklahoma initials in the next round of these illustrious playoffs. Jacksonville vs. Arizona State college basketball moves on.

1:15 – Dan’s Suit Claim: Yesterday at 2:40pm, Dan flippantly claimed that if the Mavericks won last night he would “wear a suit for 5 years”. After some prodding by Bob via Twitter, Dan’s email was flooded last night with emails from P1s, questioning Dan’s integrity. Integrity is definitely something I think of when I think of Dan. Dan, in a stroke of genius, decides to double down by claiming that he will wear a suit for 10 years if the Packers lose and is clear of all debts if the Packers win; thus dragging Bob into this tangled web of casual claims.

1:35 – Charles Haley: HOF Candidate Charles Haley joins BaD Radio live at Vitruvian Park. Donovan’s frat brother gets some ribbing from Dan about allegations that Charles played the “Junk Game” back in the day. Dan and Charles then explain how differently they would react if some guy placed his junk on their shoulder; we’re off to a great start here. Charles agrees that “likeability” plays a small role in the Hall of Fame voting. The passion of this former Cowboys Defensive End comes through in this interview. It was all about winning to him and no matter the process or means of motivation, guys succeeded when they played with him.

1:55 – More Charles Haley: Charles Haley sticks around for a second segment with BaD Radio, and the sparkling chemistry between Dan and Charles is in full force. Charles is involved with an organization that builds playgrounds at the Salvation Army in Cedar Crest, the build is taking place Friday, March 11th contact the Salvation Army across from Roosevelt High School for more details. Charles goes on to explain that free agency was the biggest hindrance that prevented the Cowboys from winning more Super Bowls in the mid-90s. A great moment between Dan and Charles Haley.

2:20 – Random Segment: In this buffer segment, the guys reflect on the previous interview with Charles Haley. Meeting and interviewing players and big timers in sports has somewhat erased the “larger than life” persona that is acquired from watching them on Sundays.

2:35 – Ranch Report: David Moore says there is pretty much no change since Bob and Dan talked with him on Tuesday. Hudson Houck could possibly be on the way out as Offensive Line coach. Defensive Line and Linebackers coach are two spots that are still open for Rob Ryan to fill. Rob Ryan is being put into a situation that he has never been in; he now has an offense that can produce. In his time as a defensive coach, he’s only been on a team that had an offense that averaged more than 17 points, once. David thinks the Packers and Bears game will come down to who you can trust more, Rodgers or Cutler. He chooses, like most people have, the Packers.

3:00 – WTDS: Bob has found a small taste for Dos Equis, he’s now up to 2 a month. In 1942, the Germans decided to exterminate the Jews. Mike needs a little Monica in his life. Happy Birthday to Rich Gannon, Ozzie Guillen, Ron Harper, Mark Stepnoski, Mama Wants Some Whitey, Ian Hill, Lorezo Lamas, Some Old F*** Named Buzz Aldrin, David Lynch, Bill Mahr, Melissa Rivers and Rainn Wilson. Spares include Marvin Bernard, Nick “The Quick” Anderson, David Rivers, Terry Kirby and Milt Plum. RIP George Burns and Barbara Stanwyck.

Listen to BaD Radio everyday from 12 – 3pm on Sports Radio 1310 The Ticket. I do, and I has opulence.
