Tuesday Morning in Sports

A real fun win versus the Bulls (in some bad uniforms) Monday Night, with Dirk dominating in the 4th Quarter in one of those “it is unfair for this guy to be on our team” moments. Also, without Jason Terry, Devin Harris was quite composed at the point, and Quisy almost broke off a triple double (sorry I ever doubted him)…Now tonight, they must play the Pacers on the back half of a back to back without Terry, too. This could be difficult tonight. 6pm.

Mavs win in Chicago

"We came with our hard hats on," said coach Avery Johnson. "And anything short of that wouldn't have been enough."

The Mavericks had a 46-30 rebounding advantage, including 15 on the offensive end. Adrian Griffin had 12 boards, including five offensive. Erick Dampier also retrieved five Mavericks misses on the way to 11 rebounds. Marquis Daniels had seven caroms to go with seven assists and 18 points. Devin Harris was opportunistic in getting 10 of the Mavs' season-best 29 assists in relief of Jason Terry, who could not play in the second half because of a strained right hamstring.

Bob,

Do you know what the 619 on Reggie's eye black means? I've asked around and I can't find the answer.
Thanks a lot,
Paul

Reggie Bush is from Spring Valley, California. The area code is 619 and therefore he is representing the 619. I represent the 608. Just not as well…

Bowl teams don’t worry about class ….

This year's bowl-bound college football teams are struggling to meet the NCAA's new academic standards, with 41 percent falling below minimum requirements and almost half lacking a 50 percent graduation rate, according to a survey released Monday.

The 56 Division 1-A football teams headed to bowl games have a lingering problem of too many student-athletes failing to complete their studies, said Richard Lapchick, the University of Central Florida professor who authored the annual report.

P1 Scott Henry took this picture when the Horns beat the Aggies and wanted to share this with the class:

Rangers in on Juan Pierre?

Two major league sources confirmed Monday that the Rangers remain significantly in the hunt for Marlins center fielder Juan Pierre, but the asking price is likely to be one of the Rangers' top young pitching prospects.

Last week, Adam Morris’s blog (lonestarball.com) featured this from a Yankees blog about Pierre (that’s right, I am quoting another blog that was quoting another blog)…

Pierre is not a great player. Last season he was not even a good player. He has no power. Neifi Perez has a higher career slugging percentage. Luis Rivas has a higher career slugging percentage. Deivi Cruz. Scott Bloody Podsednik. He is, EMPHATICALLY, not a better leadoff man than Derek Jeter. Yes, he steals more bases. He also gets caught quite frequently, and doesn't get on base very often. Thought a .305 career hitter, he doesn't walk. He ranks 89th among active players in OBP (Jeter is 21st).

He is also not a good outfielder. Baseball Prospectus has him as six runs below average in 2005, 11 runs below average in 2004, 14 runs below average in 2003.

The Yankees got nothing from their center fielders last year. As such, almost anyone would be an improvement. Unless Pierre hits .330, which he has never done, not even in Colorado, he will not help the situation dramatically. If the Yankees make him their leadoff hitter and give him over 700 plate appearances, he will actually hurt the team.

There is no logical reason, no matter how fast a player is, to give him over 10 percent of the team's offensive playing time when he will never hit a home run and get on base at, at best, an average rate. Further, let us throw down this gauntlet: any sportswriter -- reporter or columnist -- who writes that the acquisition of Pierre would give the Yankees the "pure leadoff hitter" they have been missing is guilty of dereliction of duty and of disseminating misinformation to the public.

Email alert:

Bob,
I know you opine a lot about how the rangers alienate the fan base. I couldn’t agree more. I know this may not be the best example since the Sox do a lot of things well.

For the largest donation to the Jimmy Fund the winner gets to spend the day in the war room on the 31st of July.

Can you imagine hicks letting this happen. Would actually be good since there is no activty by the rangers

John Henry himself posted it

Can anyone out there convince me that there is not a greater than 50% chance that the Cowboys lose 3 of their next 4 and finish 8-8?

I just can't see them doing much better with their offensive line in shambles.

On a side note, Bob always calls Gribble and Big Mac homophobes, but I think Bob is going a bit overboard to show how "open minded" he is recently with his blog pictures.

I mean, there is a fine line between being open minded and playing center to some dudes quarterback and Bob is getting awfully close!!

OOpps, someone may want to tell Fake Sturm that "Aggie" is the correct spelling. Go down to College Station and do some checking my friend.

Anonymous said...

No, Aggy is the correct spelling there anon. I've got Fake Sturm's back on this one.

Someone may want to tell anonymous at 9:56 AM, that is how we spell "aggy".

Bob, how did you miss this great V. Young article in the DMN claiming his rights to the Heisman.

http://www.dallasnews.com/sharedcontent/dws/spt/stories/120605dnspoutlede.ccdaa9c.html

"If they see how I'm a leader for my teammates," Young said. "I hope they'll see the numbers I've put up are basically from the first half. The second half I'm basically on the bench."

"If I played a full game, I'd have some more stats. But Coach [Mack] Brown doesn't like to blow out people, so he puts our starters on the bench."

"If they look at that and how much I love my teammates and how well we play together and how big of a leader I am to them, I'm pretty sure I should win it."

When I tuned into the 2nd half of last night's Mavs game, I honestly thought I was watching a High School scrimmage with those horrible throwback unis the Bulls were throwing out there.

Good Gawd were those horrible.

As for the game, the Mavs shut things down defensively when they had to. And Dirk had a message for the TNT crew of Kenny Smith and Chucky Cheeseburger who dubbed him Dirk Nohitski the other night.

I think it should be an instant Gay ruling if you complain about Spelling or Grammar on a blog.

We can generally figure out what the blogger meant. Then again, maybe that's why I'm AttnyDan!!

Anonymous said...

Speaking of Gay, who is that tool on the home page of BaD Radio?

If that isn't photo-shopped, then that picture is almost pole smoking gay.

Anonymous said...

And as for Dan McGraw's take on replay...

Sorry Dan.

I'd rather them make every attempt possible to get the call right than to see a game get decided on a blown call.

Good lord almighty! That guy on BobandDan.net is a total tool. That may be the gayest thing I have ever seen. I have a couple of gay friends who would even call that GAY!

vince young played four quarters against the aggies...and looked very average in the process. reggie bush never looks average.

Anonymous said...

2-3 games in a row right before the Fresno State game Reggie Bush looked VERY average. VY only looked average in one game all year! (against aggy) Bush will win the H based on 2 games (UCLA and FS) where he was a human highlight. VY just picked a bad time to play like a normal dude.

Both VY and Bush had 500+ yard games this year. VY has 35 TDs, and is the clear heart and soul of his team. He is clearly the most valuable playerin the NCAA, and one of the 2-3 best players. For those reasons, he should win the H. But if he returns for his senior year, he will be clearly the front runner, and the Horns will be ranked #1 to start the season.

Did I really just hear Tom Hicks talk bad about the Yankees financial situation with thier "aging" players? Hmmm, those overpaid, aging players have 10 straight division titles, 11 straight playoff appearances, and 6 WS appearances (4 wins) in that time period. Yeah, Tom, those Yankees don't have a clue.

Eff baseball! No more baseball talk, it is not baseball season. Football is king in Texas. Hell, you can even talk hockey, at least it is hockey season! The Rangers suck. They always have, and always will!

Three trips to the playoffs in 20 years = suck. Rangers = Suck.

Anonymous said...

yes! more baseball talk!! anything to break the monotony of cowboys talk, and bill parcells press conferences. hell talk about womens tennis for all i care, as long as it gives my ears a break from all cowboys all the time

Just so you know its AGGIE or AGGIES. Not aggy. You moron. Go Army.

Attention: Anonymous.

The whole POINT of writing it 'aggy' is to give a big F-You to the aggys out there.

Duh.

Or, as I like to say,

Dee-dee-dee.

aggys suck.

Anonymous said...

I don't understand why all those aggies call us tu. It's really UT.

Vince is merely stating that they wont be intimidated going to Cali. Alot of the players are from tough areas and have a tough mentality. Probably could have used a better word than gangster.

I dont think he should be doing interviews period, but I dont have much of a problem with what he said.

G. Fraley is truly out of touch and has waited all year to find something to write about the Horns. His comments on the DMN blog are ridiculous.
