*How to Read ADS*
Even if you have read Bob's previous posts about what is ADS we have changed some things up. I'll update you on some of the new things so you can live your life to the fullest with a brand new way to look at basketball games.
Q: Whats the difference between ADS and ADS+?
A: ADS is the Average Distance per Shot, any three pointer, layup, dunk, and field goal all get averaged in. What about free throws you ask? That is where ADS+ comes in, the plus pretty much means what it means. Its the Average Distance per Shot PLUS free throws.
Q: How do we factor in all the numbers?
A: Each FG goes in for what its marked at, a 10ft shot goes down as a 10ft shot. For the most part that's how it's done, but there are a few exceptions to this formula. We decided to mark layups, dunks, and free throws all as 1ft. That way dunks that are recorded as 0ft actually get credit in the ADS formula and free throws play some roll as well.
Q: What are the numbers in the parentheses?
A: You'll notice that we have two sets of numbers in each players per quarter stats. The number outside the parentheses are the ADS and the numbers inside the parentheses are the ADS+ for that player.
If you have any questions about the chart or how ADS works please feel free to ask.
Thanks to Heath Huston for gathering all the data.
