Penalties - Game 14 - Redskins

http://cowboysblog.dallasnews.com/archives/2010/12/bob-sturms-cowboys-penalty-ana-1.html

If we are going to clap and cheer every week when the Cowboys are nearly penalty free, then we have to point it out when the Cowboys have a bad week. And they did.

9 penalties in all by the Cowboys, and it certainly was painful throughout. Kyle Kosier moved a 3rd and Goal from the 1 to a 3rd and Goal from the 6 because of a False Start. And when Rex Grossman was carving up the defense in the 4th Quarter, the Cowboys defense had 3 penalties in that 1 period alone.

Teaching opportunity for Jason Garrett as they move on to Game #15.

Totals: 9 Penalties for 70 yards. The offense had 3 penalties (25 yards), the defense 4 (27 yards), and special teams had 2 penalties (18). Multiple penalties for each unit indicate a rather poor week across the board.

Worst Offender: Barry Church had 2 penalties - 1 on defense and 1 on special teams. For a guy who rarely plays, it is a pretty impressive accomplishment.

Here are your season totals - Keep in mind, my totals include declined and offsetting penalties. For football reasons, they matter way more than just accepted penalties.

This is through Week 14:

Doug Free is the first Cowboys player to get to double digits in penalties this season. Overall, he has had a very solid year, but this will be his point of emphasis heading into 2011, I am sure. The good news is that the majority of his penalties are pre-snap which is more concentration and focus than physically being over-matched. Coaching cannot always help a guy who is just not strong enough (except for the weight room).

You didn't know who new Cowboys' LB Kenwin Cummings was? Well, he put his name in the box-score with a holding penalty on a Redskins' punt in the 2nd Quarter. Let's hope we get to know him for more positive plays in the near future.

Based on many requests, I have constructed yet another chart below that will help you put some of these numbers into proper context. Below is the week by week penalties that were accepted for the Cowboys and their opponents in each game. This way, you can see how Wade did vs Garrett or how the Cowboys did against their opponents in a scenario that would account for different tones by different officiating crews throughout the season.
