Penalties - Week 13 vs Eagles

http://cowboysblog.dallasnews.com/archives/2010/12/bob-sturms-cowboys-penalty-ana.html

The Cowboys continue to fall down the charts of the penalized in the NFL. They now rank only 9th in total penalties and 13th in penalty yardage. It is really not very easy to jump to any other conclusions than the idea that Wade Phillips did not emphasize or punish penalty issues enough. Otherwise, how do we explain that it rose dramatically when he took the job and also dropped dramatically when he left?

Totals: 5 penalties - all accepted - for 40 yards. The offense had 3 penalties, the defense 2, and special teams had a perfect week. Once again, another very manageable, light week with the referees.

Worst Offender: I suppose Igor Olshansky for the personal foul, but let's be honest - he was an innocent man when Spencer's hit knocked Vick into Olshansky's helmet, in my estimation. Sorry, it just seems like the NFL has gone too far with this helmet contact garbage.

Here are your season totals - Keep in mind, my totals include declined and offsetting penalties. For football reasons, they matter way more than just accepted penalties.

This is through Week 13:

Miles Austin has a shocking number of penalties for a Wide Receiver. 7 of them are really out of whack given the other WRs on the roster. Andre Gurode also gets his 7th of the year, and Kevin Ogletree gets on the board with his 1st.

A perfectly quiet week from the special teams on the penalty front.

------------------------------

Based on many requests, I have constructed yet another chart below that will help you put some of these numbers into proper context. Below is the week by week penalties that were accepted for the Cowboys and their opponents in each game. This way, you can see how Wade did vs Garrett or how the Cowboys did against their opponents in a scenario that would account for different tones by different officiating crews throughout the season. What's even more mind-blowing to me is that they turn around and fine Spencer for hitting the quarterback while essentially standing up straight. Why don't they just go ahead and make the quarterback wear flags and let that be that. No sense in taking a man's money unless it obviously seems vicious.
