The Mix: “Is Danica Patrick the most overrated Sports Hot?” - Dan

The Open: “Stop Bogarting the fatty.” Danica Patrick and Denny Hamlin will join the show later on. Where’s Rich Phillips when you need him. A great Stars game last night was seen by very few because they got bumped to the Fox Sports Alternate Alternate Alternate Channel. Dan is calling for the ball; he’s always looking for a new restaurant and enjoys it when a new one opens up around his house. At a new pizza place, he notices that there is a little bit of idiocracy when it comes to flat-screens, game rooms and music blaring. “Do you like BJs” – Bob.

12:35 – Denny Hamlin: Going into the last race last year he was in first place in the standings, yet he failed to clinch the title. That finish has been a fueling agent for his races this year. He tore his ACL a year ago playing pick-up basketball, had surgery in April and was back racing a few weeks later. It was his left knee and that is his braking leg (they don’t use the right foot to brake like street drivers). In his contract there aren’t clauses saying you can’t do outside activities but they do ask that you limit the risk outside of racing. He knew LeBron was going to Miami because Michael Jordan told him while they were playing golf.

12:55 – What’s on My TiVo?: Dan has some ratings and Bob has a question, “Has American Idol’s ratings dropped since Simon Cowell left the show?” It hasn’t really dropped that much. Keeping with the ratings theme, the Super Bowl had 111 million viewers while the Oscars only had 37 million. Dan’s homework assignment to Bob, catch up on Lights Out. Dan just wants a show to talk about. It’s a ridiculous show. Bob watched Episode 2 of Chicago Code and he doesn’t think that it’s as bad as Dan initially described.

1:20 – NFL Lockout Talk: With the deadline quickly approaching for a new labor deal to be done, some news came out yesterday which is good news for fans wanting football next season. The owners, years ago, negotiated that they would get paid their TV money regardless of a lockout or not ($4.2 billion) Judge David Doty ruled that is illegal and will not allow the owners to collect that sum. Now the owners have something to lose. How this affects the new labor agreement, only time will tell.

2:20 – Danica Patrick: She’s racing in on the Nationwide Tour and Indy Car Series, so she has a full schedule again this year. She doesn’t remember Dan’s name and he nervously asks how long she’s been married. On being on tv talk shows, she says that there is always a pre-interview before you go on the show. As far as TV Commercials are concerned, when she’s reading the scripts she’ll say yes to the products and commercials that make sense. It usually takes her a day to film a commercial. She’s a good sport!

2:40 – Post-Danica Talk: Donovan notices that when Bob and Dan have a set of boobs in front of them, they bicker like brothers trying to attract the same girl. All the while, Killer is bright red because Danica thinks that his radio name is Horn Dog. Bob’s first day at the Ticket he was pitched a hair transplant. He said, “No”. Let’s get on track with the Mavericks. Tyson Chandler sprained his ankle last night but it’s being reported that it’s not serious. The Mavs championship run this year hinges very strongly on Tyson Chandler’s health and defensive presence.

3:00 – WTDS: Corby is back. On this day in 1861, Texas seceded from the Union and joined the Confederate. Happy Birthday to Ron Gant, Pete Johnson, Bill Maas, Ben Roethlisberger, John Bon Jovi, Ian Woosnam and Chris Martin.

The Open: “If you’ve had sex with anyone other than yourself in the last 10 years, you need to get yourself tested.” During the Black Guy Roundtable with the Musers this morning, Bob was voted the most “brother-friendly” on air personality at the Ticket. When getting back in touch with an old high school friend – a friend that has since changed their name – do you call them by the name you knew them as or their new name? Mayor Leppert has resigned to run for the Senate; that leaves the Ticket’s own “Key to the City-give Mayor Pro-Tem” as the Mayor. He loves children and the future.

12:40 – NBA Trades: Tomorrow is the trade deadline, and with that, Mavs rumors start floating around. Devin Harris was rumored to be part of a deal between the Mavs and the Nets; it turns out that the Nets trade Derrick Favors (#3 overall last year), two 1^st Round picks and Devin Harris to Utah for point guard Derron Williams. This makes two times that Devin Harris has been traded from an Avery Johnson coached team. Yet, Avery still says that he loves Devin Harris. I call bullsh.

12:55 – Steve Ott: Well where do we start. Steve thinks that the team did a lot of things right in last night’s 1-0 loss, except score a goal. He is very high on the addition of Goligoski calling him a left-handed Zubov. Fatigue has somewhat set in with all the injuries that have accumulated.

1:20 – TiVo Talk: The Grammy’s were the top rated show last week followed by two episodes of American Idol. Would you rather watch the Oscars or the Grammy’s? James Franco and Anne Hathaway will be hosting the Oscars this year. Dan has been getting a lot of emails about the A&E show Beyond Scared Straight, I couldn’t get the audio but here is a transcript of the scene.

1:40 – More TiVo: The recent discovery of Arrested Development by the Musers’ Junior Miller has made Bob consider whether or not Arrested Development deserves to be on the top tier of TV Shows – joining The Wire, The Shield, The Sopranos and Breaking Bad. In my humble but most accurate opinion, it is the best sitcom of all time. Too bad it was too far ahead of its time.

2:00 – Aggressniff: There are two new additions to the “Aggressniff Hall of Fame”. Listen to the segment here. Thanks to The UnTicket for the audio.

2:20 – NFL Talk: With the NFL Combine starting tomorrow, Bob jumps into some Cam Newton talk. Cam Newton said, “I don’t just see myself as a football player but also as an entertainer and an icon”. That attitude could be a red flag to some NFL teams. He is being compared to JaMarcus Russell but other than being black and from the SEC, that comparison does not hold much water. Could you make that case that his success, despite all the controversy around him, might bode well for the NFL? At the end of the season he was projected in the 3^rd round; now it’s being thrown around that the Redskins at #11 are interested in taking him. NFL personnel legend Gil Brandt has said that it would not surprise him if Cam went #1 overall. Interesting. Of the top 8 draft teams, only Cleveland (with Colt McCoy) is not in the market for a quarterback.

2:45 – Quick Hits: Dan feels that 127 Hours and Black Swan were a little better than The King’s Speech. In talking about TV and Oscars with Tim Cowlishaw at the Stars game, Bob found out that he’s seen all 10 Best Picture nominees. When it comes to the Oscars, does Best Picture always mean the Best Movie or is it more of an artsy, back-story, feel good pick? Last 10 Best Picture winners: The Hurt Locker, Slumdog Millionaire, No Country for No Men, The Departed, Crash, Million Dollar Baby, Lord of the Rings, Chicago, A Beautiful Mind and Gladiator (yeah he is).

3:00 – WTDS: On this day in 1836, the siege of the Alamo began in San Antonio, Texas and Bob Knight threw a chair in 1985. Happy Birthday to Fred Belitnitkoff, Ed “Too Tall” Jones, Jackie Smith, Aziz Ansari, Dakota Fanning, Peter Fonda, Marc Price, Brad Whitford and Johnny Winter. Today’s spares are Pat Barnes, Greg Hill, John Shelby and Steve Stricker. RIP W.E.B. Dubois and John Quincy Adams.

The Mix: A Norm heavy mix with the boys from BaD Radio, so here are some GIFs of soccer star El Hadji Diouf. Unlike the mix, it made me laugh.

The Open: Eating humans is a last resort, not a first resort when stranded on the side of the road. On that note, Dan shook off the catcher and drove into work on his own. That’s the last talk of weather I will report on here today. Here’s a bonus Gay not Gay regarding Channel 8’s Craig Civale and his earmuffs on tv. Bob, being a former Northerner, informs us that earmuffs are reserved for the snow bunnies. What do you think?

12:40 – Luck in the NFL: If the Giants held on to the 31-10 lead against the Eagles – the Desean Jackson punt return game – the Packers do not make the playoffs. Also, by Detroit winning their first road game in 25 attempts, Tampa Bay was eliminated and allowed Green Bay to be in the playoffs. On the other hand, Green Bay never trailed by more than 7 points in any game this season, so it could be argued that Green Bay was not your typical 6 seed. So much that happens on the field is earned, but an equal amount is pure chance.

1:00 – TiVo Talk: Donovan gave Matt LeBlanc’s new show “Episodes” a try and thinks it is pretty bad. They pretty much mailed in the title. Karl Pilkington, from “The Ricky Gervais Show”, has his own show on the Science Channel titled “An Idiot Abroad”. Check it out. Dan reviews “The Chicago Code”, he claims it’s a little over the top and cliché; but in all reality, his bar is set way too high when it comes to cop shows with The Wire and The Shield being the top of the tier. It’s decent, but it’s still a network tv show. And then there is this video of The Today Show wondering what the internet is. This was from 1994.

1:20 – Michael Young Fiasco: Everyone is now aware of how Michael Young has gone back on what he said a few months ago and is now demanding a trade. The problem with going public with all this is that he has now taken every bit of leverage the Rangers had in trading him and has thrown that in the gutter. All of Michael Young’s “x-factorness” – team player, great clubhouse guy, team first, leader – has now seemingly disappeared.

1:40 – Michael Young Phone Calls: One caller tries to make the point that Michael Young felt betrayed by management. This could be the case but it goes against everything Young has been about in his tenure here. I guess “trying to make the team better” is all good unless it takes away and threatens his role on the team. Dan has a thought that Ron Washington has the ability to make this right and Young will stay. For the sake of the Rangers, I hope he’s right.

2:00 – Dwaine Caraway: In lieu of the Dallas Mayor Pro Tem Dwaine Caraway giving a key to the city to Michael Vick, Bob and Dan take a look at his interview with The Musers and some other people who have received a key to the city. He sounds like a bit character that Gordon Keith would pull off. I’ll try to get you the audio at some point. Past recipients of the key to the city include Martellus Bennet and Gene Simmons. Mayor Leppert has asked him to draft some guidelines before handing out any more keys.

2:30 – Bob Ortegel: The long time Dallas Mavericks television broadcaster has been let go. The news of his departure comes after a strange absence over the 2 weeks. He wasn’t suspended, yet there is a cloud of mystery surrounding the circumstances. When you hear that a 70 year old is taking a break, you can’t help but think of medical reasons. Back in the summer, he seemed uneasy about his return with the team; Bob lets us know that with the Mavericks, the announcers are on a year by year basis. It could just be the fact that Cuban wanted to get younger at that position, and being let go mid-season is not unprecedented. In the Dallas Morning News, Cuban spun it to make it seem like Bob Ortegel was leaving the Mavericks, not the other way around. Apparently, they offered him a position on the radio broadcast and he turned it down. As a Mavs fan, “The Coach”, Bob Ortegel will be missed.

3:00 – WTDS: On this day in 1964, The Beatles made their American television debut on the Ed Sullivan Show. Happy Birthday to Vladdy Daddy, John Kruk, Jim Miller, Pete O’Brien, Danny White, Jim Jay Bullock, Red White and Goo, and Joe Pesci. Now for the spares. Todd Light and Mookie Wilson.

The Mix: Norm hands you a pacifier when you enter one of his parties. Getting tickets to the Super Bowl for others is like being in a plane, “Secure your own oxygen mask before helping others”.

The Open: Here is host of Ghetto Jeopardy…Donovan Lewis! Day 18 of the Dan in a Suit Flipbook. The PR rep from the Washington Capitals, Nate Ewell, who is the lone hater of 1920 Sports Reporter guy is leaving his job. He got ballyhooed.

12:35 – Mavs Talk: With the Clippers in town, the Mavericks came out looking ragged. Blake Griffin was a dominating force in the 1^st half but then Brendan Haywood finally earned his paycheck with his physical play against The Griffin. The Mavericks red hot shooting in the 2^nd half coupled with an arctic cold streak from the Clippers allowed the Mavs to pull ahead and never look back. Some thoughts to take away from the game; Blake Griffin is a complete player, not just a dunker. The Clippers are a team on the way up and the buzz is starting to catch on.

12:50 – Mark Cuban: The consummate MFFL/owner joins Bob and Dan for a sit down chat. On the Dirk injury, Cuban says it was important for him to come back and play himself into shape. Mark has created some waves amongst the BCS with his idea for a mid-season play in tournament. Check out the details on his blog. Post 1, 2, 3 and 4. In everything from MMA, owning an NBA team, the movie industry and the future of newspapers, Mark Cuban has proven to be a forward thinking mind that is not afraid to question the current establishment and offer up other options that enhance the experience and product for the customer. We are lucky to have him as the owner of the Mavericks.

1:30 – TiVo Talk: Was there a bigger buzzkill as a kid without cable (Dan), than the State of the Union address taking over every channel? Dan tells how as a kid he never had cable and vowed from that day forward to always have hundreds of channels to choose from. At the behest of Tim Cowlishaw, Bob took a chance on The Big Bang Theory, a CBS comedy. His review; he found himself laughing a few times but the over-the-top laughtrack is a deal breaker of epic proportions. CBS seems to be the only network that is still clinging to the horrible audio of random people giving you a cue to laugh. It’s a shame that CBS is the most watched network. 1:50 – Dirk Interview: Like the State of the Union and birthdays, the Bob and Dan interview with Dirk Nowitzki comes along once a year. Today is that day. Dirk says that his knee is starting to respond a lot better and that he might have come back a little too soon but is good now. He agrees with Dan in the fact that a half court shot should be worth 4 points. Unlike a lot of foreign players, Dirk never had to leave home to play for a professional team in Germany; he played for the professional team in his hometown. He talks about his 2 months of boot camp he had to do in Germany; his feet stuck out the front of the tent and he had to wear a sweat suit because they didn’t have a uniform big enough for him. He goes on to say that he shopped around some other European teams and was recruited by tons of colleges (he visited Kentucky, Cal and Stanford) before making the decision to play in the NBA. He’s glad he made the decision to come over at a young age rather than come over when he was 25 or so; it’s easier to get the rookie treatment out of the way when you are young. He hasn’t been to a mall in Dallas in 10 years. Dan asks him if he dreams in German or English; German with some English mixed in. Classic Dan. Dirk obviously doesn’t want to talk about Nazi stuff that Dan brought up, but does say that he has heard some Nazi stuff from fans on the road. Dirk feels that he would love to stay in basketball when he retires eventually but doesn’t know in what aspect. Dirk asks Bob how long he’s been bald. Dirk berates Bob for liking Liverpool; Dirk is a huge soccer fan. Dirk to Dan, “Nice tie, buddy”. Brilliance.

2:40 – A Post-Dirk Segment: When you rate the “N-bombs”, both are right up there. Credit goes out to Dirk for handling it well and it is not a lie or façade when Dirk says that he doesn’t see himself as a celebrity. He is the least pretentious person that makes $20 million a year. 3:00 – WTDS: Would you draft a player in the first round if he was guaranteed to block one kick a game? Clay Matthews just signed a shampoo endorsement, much to the chagrin of Bob. Happy Birthday to Wayne Gretzky, Gary Molar, Bob Uecker, Eddie Van Halen, Ellen DeGeneres and Girth, Wind and Fire. Spares include; Gary Plummer, Jack Youngblood and Tim Pugh. The Mix: All 9 Ticket hosts vs Jay Ratliff (fighting for his life and his family’s life). Who would win?

The Open: BaD Radio, reporting for duty (ha, duty). The boys from Bad Radio receive a gift from the fine gentlemen at www.beardski.com – no, it was not packed in coffee grounds. Grubeski. Bobski. Maybe he’ll wear it when he goes to see the Bears play at Soldier Field while he’s sitting with TC?

12:35 – NFL Playoffs: These NFL playoffs have reinforced the age old cliché of “Any Given Sunday”. At this point in the playoffs it’s asinine to hope for a certain team over another. No one gave the Jets a chance, yet they mowed through Peyton Manning and Tom Brady and have Ben Rothlisberger in their sights. If the Steelers win the Super Bowl this year they will have 3 Super Bowl titles since ’05; uncool. A little bit of dramatic irony, if the Bears would have won their last game of the season, Tampa Bay would have been in the playoffs rather than Green Bay.

12:55 – TiVo Jr: This Dan-centric segment focuses on American Idol. Allow me to sum it up for you; Steven Tyler looks like a tranny version of Steven Tyler, J-Lo is very hot and hates being mean to people and Randy Jackson (the former weakest link) is now the rock of the show. People sing. Some are good, most suck. Everybody misses Simon.

1:15 – Steve Ott Show: Steve Ott joins the show from Alberta, Canada. The Stars are in the midst of a very solid run, 15 of 16 possible points since the start of the new year. All 8 game win streaks aside, Dan wants to ask about a pre-game fight that almost happened. In a little bit of gamesmanship, Mike Ribeiro would “violate” the red line during pre-game warm-ups. It’s like when you’re riding in the backseat of your parents’ stationwagon and you and your sister get into a fight because you keep putting your hand onto “her side of the seat”. Sports!! 1:35 – 2000 All-Star Team Talk: Coming off a tough loss at Chicago last night, the Mavericks have some serious decisions to make; the most important being, should they sit Dirk for a few weeks until he is 100%? In the playoffs, 70% Dirk is acceptable in the playoffs, but there is no reason to have him out there in January. The Mavs are close to signing Peja Stojakovic; just what they need, a soft Euro jump shooter. Also, Manny Ramirez is in talks with joining the Texas Rangers. Do they really want Manny? All things being equal, who would you take, Manny or Vlad?

1:55 – Ask Sports Sturm: This addition has little to do with sports, unless you count Survivor and skateboarding as sports. Judson Birza, air-head surfer winner of the most recent Survivor, was recently arrested. Check out the video. It’s safe to say I would not trade financial portfolios with him. Bob soon goes from TMZ Sturm to Sports Sturm with a little study he’s been doing based on the claim that Dan made that it was ridiculous that Eric Spoelstra’s first coaching gig was with the Miami Heat. A couple of other coaches that have taken odd roads to get there; Eric Mangini and Brian Bellick are a few road less traveled examples.

2:20 – Songs to Bob: Dan and Donovan, with the best intentions at heart, attempt to pump Bob up for his trip to Chicago to watch the NFC Championship game. Listen to their songs here. I smell a Grammy!

2:35 – Screenless: This could be the greatest beer dispenser of all time. The 100 Greatest Movie Insults of All Time. This guy is insane. Did this player really deserve a penalty?

3:00 – WTDS: Mike sunk Greggo’s battleship. On this day in 1921, Judge Kenesaw Mountain Landis became Commissioner of Baseball. Breaking news, Ditka is picking the Bears. Happy Birthday to Brian Giles, Billy “White Shoes” Johnson, Jack Nicklaus, Hakeem Olajuwon, Ranger Great Rusty Greer, Geena Davis, and Muff Bumpers 2.
