Episode: 2921

Location: Studio

The Mix: “Which threesome, there are so many?” - Bob

The Open: It’s an Al Pacino open. “I don’t know what to say really…”. As you might know, Bob went to a very strict Baptist school. He wasn’t allowed to go to movies, wear a slap-bracelet or cuff your jeans. They also had a slave day, where the boys would be auctioned off for a fundraiser. He remembers black face being a part of it. One of his basketball coaches believed that they were experiencing a losing streak because there was “sin in the camp”. This all had something to do with weather, and the tie-in to sports is that there are some sports teams with the nickname Tornadoes, Hurricane, Earthquakes, Avalanche, etc. They are notoriously bad things but for some reason no team is named the Cancer or something like that.

12:40 – Mavs Talk: After a once in a lifetime collapse in the 4th quarter Saturday night, Dan is shockingly not too worried about the Mavericks chance in this series. Dan thinks that the Mavs have outplayed the Blazers in 3 of the 4 games and are clearly the better team. Bob counters that the Mavs aren’t playing the Blazers, they are playing their own history and baggage. This team is so psychologically damaged that it’s hard to trust them. At the first sign of adversity, it doesn’t seem like they are capable of regrouping and stomping on the neck of the opponent.

1:00 – More Mavs Talk: The Mavs got killed by Brandon Roy in the 4th quarter, yet Rick Carlisle continued to put Shawn Marion on Roy throughout the entire quarter. Carlisle didn’t make any adjustments. The offense became stagnant, with the Mavs ADS (Average Distance per Shot) in the 4th quarter being 19ft from the basket. Dirk only had 3 shots in the 4th quarter – his biggest and most productive quarter in the first 3 games this series. Now they take phone calls. He wants to know who is to blame for Dirk only touching the ball a handful of times in the 4th quarter. It’s hard to give a definite answer to that but it is true that it happened.

1:15 – Even More Mavs Talk: Looking back at the 2006 team that played Miami, the 3 changes are Josh Howard, Devin Harris and Erick Dampier. Those spots have been “upgraded” with Marion, Kidd and Chandler. It’s unreal how the Mavericks were able to let a 23 point lead slip away in the final 13 minutes. Another caller: He reiterates that fact that the Mavs are a soft team by saying that they are afraid to drive the lane. Even if the Mavs win tonight, Bob is still not confident that they can win this series. He’s been bit too many times by this dog and now he has reservations. Another caller: He thinks that the Mavs are lacking an Alpha Male on this team. He says the Mavs need a dirty brother who can bring in an attitude change to this team. Donovan notes that he’s seen Tyson Chandler meaner and it seems as though he’s adopting the identity of the Mavs instead of the other way around.

1:40 – Dan’s World: Dan went to Tolbert’s this weekend to see the great Mike Rhyner and Petty Theft. He got to introduce them onstage and Mike wore the Cleveland Indians shirt that Dan got him. Then they got Dan to do “Ya’ Wall”, the Pink Floyd parody song. Then Dan had to drive the babysitter home because his wife fell asleep. It could’ve set up for some real awkwardness. Bob thinks that that is the job of the wife, just to keep things safe. Dan couldn’t make it to a meeting because the pool guy was supposed to show up this morning to install a heater in the pool.

2:00 – NHL Playoffs: The Vancouver/Chicago series was once thought to be a sweep for Vancouver after going up 3-0 over the Blackhawks but Chicago has come back to tie the series 3-3. This transitions into NBA Playoff talk where Memphis is on the verge of going down 3-1 against the Memphis Grizzlies and the Lakers/Hornets series is tied at 2 games apiece.

2:20 – Audio: Antoine Dodson got arrested for marijuana possession. Audio fail. With John Rhadigan taking over the Rangers play by play from Josh Lewin, it appears that Tom Grieve is not fully on-board with it. He finally got Tom to laugh at one of his jokes, they were talking about a play where a Ranger made a play that resembled a bowling shot. But he took it too far and Tom complete shuts him off and moves on. Whenever the Rangers play on Channel 21, we don’t get to experience Jim Knox, there’s some chick that does it, Julie Dobbs. She interviews an old woman, Jim Knox’s bit, and says that the lady has been a Rangers fan her entire life – the lady is 93 years old. It’s not fair to Julie to have to follow in the steps of the great Jim Knox.

2:40 – NFL Draft: It’s starting to look like Carolina will be taking Cam Newton with the #1 pick on Thursday. There seems to be about 10 players on the top tier but no one is quite sure in what order they will be taken. Today Bob talks about what if the Cowboys move up in the draft? This is just a hypothetical. Cleveland at #6 appears to be the most likely candidate. They need a WR, badly. Dallas would likely trade their first and a 3rd for Cleveland’s 1st and Dallas would try to get Patrick Peterson. The Cowboys also have a history of trading with Mike Holmgren, the man in charge in Cleveland. Keep in mind, the Cowboys would be picking #6 or higher if they would’ve lost that last meaningless game to end the season last year.

3:00 – WTDS: On this day in 1944 the United Negro College Fund was founded. Happy Birthday to Tim Duncan, Travis Fryman, Meadowlark Lemon, Fist the Whole Fist and Nothing but the Fist, Darren Woodson, Hank Azaria, Stu Cook, Jason Lee, Talia Shire, Bjorn Ulvaeus and Renee Zellweger. Spares include Mark Bryant, Brad Clontz and Randy Cross. RIP to Edward R. Murrow and Bea Arthur.

Listen to BaD Radio everyday from 12 – 3pm on Sports Radio 1310 The Ticket. I do, and I has opulence.
